Regarding the new Ae 12": The sad news is; Envane does not reach the hights of either Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetae, Basscadet, Anti, Garbage, Anvil Vapre or the Gescom stuff... Too sad. Drown Quarter is ok for sure... but that cannot save this EP. I'm sure that the lads will be back on top when 'Chiastic Slide' is released... You can't be more wrong about that one mate... <Ae> If anything, I found draun quarter to be the least exciting track on the disc. Consider this: 1. 902 Quarter: The smoothly-sequenced polyrhythmical static of traditional Autechre with groovy hip-hop record scratching. This track contains everything you love about Autechre... with that distant synth melody lighting dusting all the beats in lush tranquility, yet this record scratching thing is totally new. Best thing is, it works well in the mix, not just Ae with scratches. :) 2. Latent Quarter: This track starts off a little weak, yet given a few minutes, the dense layers of static slowly seep into this wallowing bass wobble that just makes me melt in aural glee. 3. Laughing Quarter: By far the hardest, fastest and best track on this ep, drawing back fond memories of Anvil Vapre's wacky beat structuring, only the beats have been further decomposed into mushy static (if decomposed leaves were static, mushy static is the best way to describe the majority of tracks on "Chiastic Slide"). Melody on this track is quite prominent. 4. Draun Quarter: the longest and probably least interesting track of the set, featuring a slightly more complicated rhythm, but the melodies I find to be kinda drab after a while... eventually the beats stop and the melody noodles off into the distance. End of track. :) Having heard both Envane and Chiastic Slide, I can tell you that Envane is certainly a warm-up for their new album. Chiastic Slide is probably Autechre's least accesable release yet, and has taken me a while to get into the groove. But it's worth it. Tracks like Tewe and Nuane are some of the most abstract excursions in the noisier side of the electronic spectrum. But Ae have put so much care into the construction of each track, at once the noise becomes quite infectious, and sent me into space after the fifth or sixth listen. I've never been so impressed before as I have by Ae's constant stream of fine releases. Preparing for the new Ae: Expect nothing, and you'll get everything. It ain't Incunabula, Amber or Tri Repetae. It's Chiastic Slide, and don't you forget it. </Ae> Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

Hmmm - bit of a difference of opinion at the 10-1 slot, Geoffrey. Obviously the snootier elements will sniff at the "predictable" Ae discussion - that's fine. Ever since I saw them live in November '93, Autechre have been one of my favourites, and the new stuff takes them onto a higher level still. I make no apologies for praising their music. There's instant satisfaction if you want it, but so many elements and so much craft upon repeated concentrated listening. It seems to me there's a palpable creative will at work, a single-mindedness which is apparent throughout their output. Yes - I very much like Envane. Don't be put off, Booth/Brown fans. adam OnBefore - Warm Data - thanks, CiM.

I love Autechre.... I always have. Just wanted to check your opinions ;-) The truth is; I haven't got 'Envane' yet, so I was more than curios bout Ae's new piece of art. Truly.... Hope I'll get hold of it tomorrow though! Thanks. Fredric Fredric Enter our world: homepage of GLiST Records www.t.kth.se/t94/t94_vic/public
