ok, serious trainspottage here: somewhere in the middle of the vibert remix of ui ("unknow," track 13) on the lo recordings' "united mutations" comp, an incredible jazz track gets mixed in...sounds like at least two saxophones--very dark & dissonant--almost, in some ways, like the ROVA sax quartet. It's quite a long sample--2 minutes maybe. Well, the question then: does anyone know what the hell it is, who's playing on it, what's it from? i doubt i'll ever find my answer on this, but you never know. --phil philiphughsherburne brownudeptofenglish *providenceriusofa* 401 .453 .4116 -->our ears are now in excellent condition --john cage

sure: lo recordings, vol. 3 track list: 1. barbed, "vibrators" 2. luke vibert, "controlling transmission" 3. sycophants, "second" 4. springheel jack, "sweep" 5. ui, "out" 6. the mellowtrons "i want you so mad..." 7. wormhole "headbanger" 8. david kristian "strange mountaineers" 9. tortoise "why we fight (d version)" 10. margoo "villain" 11. sycophants "fourth" 12. thurston moore/infrastructure "yvonne/thaw" 13. ui/vibert "unknow" 14. echo park "razor kiss" 15. newt "epsilon boot" 16. sycophants "first" 17. mike flowers vs. aphex twin "debase" 18. stick basin "pin" 19. sycophants "third" descriptions: mostly it's sort of experimental drum'n'bass, lotta complex breaks & sampling. no divas. possibly like the stuff on avantgardism? (a guess). highlights are the vibert, the ui/vibert, david kristian, and the flowers/aphex twin is a killer. almost a stereolabby transcendence, with some slick-ass d'n'b behind it. the sycophants & some of the other tracks are sort of noisy interlude pieces--interesting, but not nearly as good as the tracks i mentioned. above all, very worth it, i'd say. no other jazz moments, though--just on the ui/vibert. (could it be the Chicago Underground Orchestra? another possibility, i s'pose...) Is anyone else familiar w/ ROVA's work? i can imagine that being mixed into some other beat-heavy stuff to incredible effect. imagine: complex, resonant sax quartet spliced up & served over beats...mmm, tasty. --phil philiphughsherburne brownudeptofenglish *providenceriusofa* 401 .453 .4116 -->our ears are now in excellent condition --john cage

hmm. certainly not the tortoise--it's just a (barely) remixed version of "why we fight," almost identical to the 7" version (recently rereleased on soul static sound). the ui track (by themselves) is a live recording of pretty raw funk; not a bad song, but it feels a little out of place on the comp. echo park's is ok--i don't know them--sort of dark, 4/4 midtempo. really, though, like i said before, it's all that other stuff that makes the comp really worthwhile. and the ui/vibert, again, is stellar. in my oh-so-humble opinion. phil philiphughsherburne brownudeptofenglish *providenceriusofa* 401 .453 .4116 -->our ears are now in excellent condition --john cage
