Paul: Hey bro
Phil: Yeah?
Paul: You know, our last album _Snivilisation_ didn't get as much praise
as our Brown album. What do you think went wrong?
Phil: Duh, don't know mate, maybe we need to ask someone here at MTV
how to make a better techno album. Shit Mtv knows everything
they are the experts on good music. Look at how well they get the
masses to buy anything they put on the air.
Paul: Yeah, you're right. Let's ask Tabitha Soren/Kurt Scroder how they
would make a techno full-length.
Phil: Yeah, maybe then we will be #1 for the IDM poll this year!
***********************************************************************
C'mon. _In Sides_ may not be your favorite full-length of '96. Fine. But
to claim that Mtv had something to do with the way ORBITAL goes about
their production is ludicrous. When IN SIDES came out, many people on
the list (myself included) predicted that it would be voted best of '96.
Why didn't all you crybabies start shouting then? If it's not Rephlex
(GONZI I'm joshing you) it's no good? C'mon. How many IDM releases came
out this year with the ammount of songwriting that _in Sides_ has? Not
many. Shit Bochum Welt can't even write more than 20 mins of music, but
it's a full-length. As you listen to _In Sides_ it becomes quite evident
that Orbital spent a great deal of time and dedication to each track.
Maybe the album is *TOO* perfect for some of you IDM'ers, not wierd
enough? Does an IDM full-length have to always be odd to be great?
Sorry folks, there are tons of great IDM artists, but Orbital put out a
masterpiece. Minute by Minute the songs have fluidity and structure,
something that IDM lacks. I think many on the list were relieved to hear
a Full-length NOT of the endless loop form (as many people claim
Autechre do). The beats are there when they need be. The melodies are
there at the right time. If you listen well, you call tell that there is
enough improvisation on each track as well.
If having IDM tracks with structure is Mtv's fault, then I hope more
musicians pay attention b/c endless loops, or 2min Bochum Welt type
tracks do nothing to help IDM progress to new frontiers! Orbital put out
a full length with superb quality and that is why they deserve and WON,
not b/c of Mtv give me a break.
Orbital, like other great musicians, were just right time right place!
peace,
