I must admit that I get a certain thrill out of the notion of listening to music of which few others are even aware and fewer still appreciate. It Makes me feel soooo coool...man. So, relative to the general population, Orbital fits the bill. On the IDM list, however, they're just not underground/weird enough. After all, we're all familiar with their music--so it's on to the next thing, looking for that next band, that next sound that'll knock us all on our asses. (Not to say that people aren't entitled to dislike the Orbital sound on its own merits.) And that's fine, but really, really listen to In Sides and you'll see that there's an awful lot there, just waiting to blow you away. Let's not allow our efforts to be hip and a little ahead of the scene to blind us to the fantastic music being made "established" (awful word) bands. Best moment on the albumReminds me why I like music in the first placeCan't believe they didn't play this track in concert: The wicked, wicked drum roll at about 2:30 into Adnan's. Listen loud. Best track on the album IMHO and not the only great one. all for now, magic hands ______________________________ Reply Separator _____________________________ ____ Subject: Re: (idm) IDM Poll 1996 RESULTS Author: benm@tiac.net at NRG Date: 05/01/97 22:37 I personally feel that In Sides is the most varied, and textured peice of IDM/ambient/hardcore when it wants to be album I have yet heard. Maybe this is due to my mainstream ignorance, and my lack of IDM savy, but I love Orbital, and while past works such as Snivilization and "Orbital" may not be wonderful, they try different things, and maintain a creative consistency. Orbital is wonderful.

This is more or less how I feel about de guys.. I don't know if it's about being 'weird' though. For me, Orbital are great at what they do, and they have turned so many people on to dance music (Satan Live is in at No.3 in the UK *NATIONAL* chart), but it won't ever be real techno music to me. I listen to most of their records and I can't find anything that really turns me on - no emotion, nothing that makes me happy or sad, no funkiness, no humour. As a kind of 'bridge' between pop music and the sonic innovators, so people unfamiliar with techno can dip their toes, I'm all for it, but 808 State did it long before, and oh, so *much* better..
