RHK's "Step Write Run" collects most of the tracks from the series of 6 12" singles on his own Alphaphone label. It most resembles Sandoz, but a bit more techno-oriented. His new/upcoming project is _Intoxica_ by Nitrogen. Though quite nice overall, it is too similar to his other recent output. Fans should enjoy it, but he really needs to add some new twists. On the other hand, I have not heard anyone else do material quite like Kirk's, so he can get away with it to some extent. Still, as I said about Atom Heart a while back, it can be fascinating to examine different facets of the same gem, but only for so long. Atom Heart has since added enough new twists, as well as slowing his release schedule a little. Here's hoping RHK will get out of his (admittedly productive) rut. Cabaret Voltaire were always about static or slowly-shifting structures, but the sounds and the way they were employed used to change a lot more from release to release. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> ==> MPEG audio clips <== m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "We invented machines in order to reduce our work. Funny you should ask, I just got this in the mail today. Quite good. I would put it in between Sandoz, Sweet Exorcist, and say 'Virtual state'. IMHO the track layering is a little simpler ala Sandoz, but not as jumpy/aggressive as Sandoz-it's more moody. A little more dreamy in feel-a lot of unexpected and unique sounds/loops (I'm getting used to RHK using similar patterns for like 3 different songs under 3 different aliases). It has it's dancy moments, but it's also got that chill mellow dub ethnic groove that he does so well. This is the set I think some people wanted the 3rd Sandoz to sound like, instead of Everyman got dreaming. It's definitely worth it... Peace, Nate On Mon, 23 Dec 1996, Jan Hanford wrote:

If you're looking for a place where Richard H Kirk has stretched out a little from his excellent minimal dancey stuff, I would highly recommend the release _Agents_With_False_Memories_ on Ash International. A disconnected and reconnected mishmash of sublime, loping beats, dubbed-out spacey melodic elements and an encyclopedia of spoken-word and musical samples. It comes out to 50+ minute piece, but it never gets boring. Occasionally jarring, but it manages to draw you in anyways. Superb, and it proves that Kirk isn't a horse of a single color. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwach parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry
