briefly, the new boards of canada (skam) is just incredible makeout music; almost every track (except for nlogix) is really sensuous electronic funk, without the fromage. i plan to make good use of this record on a wet, rainy night with the perfect mate . . . 9/10 on the other hand, the autechre keynell remix was slightly disappointing. the first side is good, though lengthy, with a nice beaty motif that runs for a couple minutes, jumps to the babble scratching from E1 of the original gescom release, and returns to the motif to close it up. the second side is a slow, plodding song that i would use for a love scene, were i to shoot a film with such a scene. it goes on a bit too long for my taste, but i give credit to autechre for remixing a track which can't be traced back (easily) to the original gescom track. i'd say 6/10 but since they had to remix songs from a brilliant ep to start with, my hopes were higher than they should have been. ergo, 7/10. qed. obnonIDM: speaking as one who has written a number of non-personal web pages, let me just make a quick comment: if you have to balance school and work with writing a page for a student group that requires constant rewriting and updating, you must decide how you're going to allocate your time. i have two versions for this page, one with frames, and one without and with minimal graphics. i will tell you right now that i would rather (and i do) spend more time on the framed page, which gives a better interface and a more professional look. as a matter of personal pride i write a page for a browser which gives the best, most consistent looking and easily codable page. this is netscape, hands down, but the point is that if you're not getting paid to do a page, and you don't have unlimited time/resources on your hands, you have to make a decision. the people who code the browsers have decided to go ahead with their own html "standards"; it's a shitty situation that doesn't benefit everyone, but that's the reality. face up to it, and if you code, make a choice and live with it. don't give people a hard time because they don't write a page for lynx (!), mosaic (!!), or aol (no comment) browsers. evolve to netscape, folks. thanks, and a cool yule to all of ye, alex Alexander ("Alex" will do nicely) Peter Reynolds polygon@jhu.edu http://jhunix.hcf.jhu.edu/~polygon http://www.jhu.edu/~jhufilm - Senior User Consultant Homewood Academic Computing, Johns Hopkins University, Homewood Campus Baltimore, MD USA

Just wanted to say... I really like the use of the variable amplitude voices mixed in beat of that mix (and also heard on the BoardsoCanada), really gets me groovin. Yeah that trick [mapping sample start point to velocity] is rather wicked with vocal samples, and thankfully not overused (yet). Out of curiousity, is anyone here anal enough to have sat down and figured out what the full sample says in either the gescom or boards of canada tracks?
