I don't believe that Terr Thaemlitz is on IDM; if you'd posted to
ambient@hyperreal.com we'd have been treated to one of his screeds
on de-contextualizing and re-contextualizing. When he posts these
they seem like they make perfect sense, yet I'm always left with
the feeling that I've lost the plot somewhere.
At any rate, a different standard applies depending on whether the music
comes from someone who is alive and one who is dead, and whose less
savory opinions are rendered moot by history. There are many reasons
to dislike the operas of Wagner, but his own scurrilous beliefs seem
rather beside the point at this late date.
At any rate, it is possible for right bastards to make good music; talent
seems unfortunately to be morally and ideologically neutral. My father
is a symphony conductor, so I got an earful of gossip and had first
had experiences with the petty weaknesses of 'great musicians.' We're
all human, and prejudices and manias are par for the course.
Which is not to say that you should support musicians with whom you
disagree on some issue, just that in the grand scheme of things the music
does stand apart from the individual.
