Has anyone heard the Derek Bailey cd entitled Guitar, drums 'n' bass (Avant 060)? Some information on it can be found at www.shef.ac.uk/misc/rec/ps/efi/labels/avantzad/avan060.html, but I would like to know whether the jungle beats are soft and mellow or more hardsteppa. Thanks, Karl-Michael.

Yeah, I've heard it. The title covers it pretty accurately. It's a bunch of not very inventive but very fast jungle loops ("programmed" by some japanese guy) over which mister Bailey plays avantgardistic noise guitar. Initially it made me laugh, but after a track or two, it just got boring. Don't get me wrong - the idea of jungle rhythms with loud guitars appeals very much to me (I would love to hear something like Ed Rush vs. Godflesh or Uncharted Territory remixing Slayer), but these are pointless "arty" freestyle guitar noodlings over some second rate jungle track. Actually, the latest Buckethead cd is a sort of hybrid between metal riffs and drum and bass breakbeats. From a few listens, I found neither part to truly hold its own (i.e. the jungle was not that great compared to most jungle tracks, same for the metal riffs), but it is still a good attempt to cross-breed these two genres. Plus, Bill Laswell contributes to the cause, so it can't be all bad ;). I don't have the label info or anything off hand, but I can find out very easily for anyone who wants to know. I heard a couple tracks from this fellow's new album recently...i think he's an experimental/jazz/fusion guitarist, and he has made an album of noisey fucked up guitar with big crazy drum 'n bass beats underneath...really neat stuff...anyone else heard this? What do you think of the album? Trying to decide whether to buy it or not... Thanks for the input in advance ! Hmmm, never thought I'd see Derek's name next to idm.... Anyway, he's a European free-improv guitarist that's in his 50s or 60s and he started practicing to some London pirate radio station that was playing jungle (yep, a while ago back when it wasn't d & b) and then got together with John Zorn to put an album of this out. Unfortunately, the guy behind Derek is DJ Ninj, who lays down some of the *lamest* beats. :-( But I'm a Bailey fan, so I love listening to his skronknoise along with anything, even Ninj's dullass programming, so I'm a bit biased. It *is* a fairly short album (only about 45 minutes) for the money, so take my opinion for what it's worth. cya brian np: D.J. from _Lodger_ - appropriately
