I just got a disc by Loop Guru called "Duniya" and I love it. It's an ethnic sampling extravaganza which I know you guys love to trash, but I think it's a great cd. Any thoughts? Us guys, huh? I think you'll find there a number of pople out there who think this is one fantastic disc - I personally am glad it finally came out domestic. I got the impression, though, that it was more than just sampling. Dave "We have eliminated any interruptions or distractions." dmanning@cwis.unomaha.edu................dmanning@synergy.net

i reviewed it aeons ago (when it was first released in the UK) and i said it was great then. i still think it's great. also of note is their "shrinic visions" CD single and their incredible space-dub-ethnic workout "The Third Chamber" - this last one is one of favorite dubby discs of all time. they have a new album called Amrita which i've only listened to in a store but it sounded good. i'm glad waveform had the good sense to pick them up for domestic distribution, but i wish they hadn't tampered with "duniya" (the domestic is missing some tracks from the import) -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/People/jsd

If they're not, they ought to be.

Well, I guess for those who live on diet Coke this would be an expected reaction. Meanwhile, many people who don't even own a Windham Hill cd think Loop Guru is gorgeous. Yummy. you people are all completely insane. i just don't understand this loop guru <-> windham hill/chip davis/mannheim steamroller comparison. they're more like meat beat manifesto meets african head charge meets harry partch meets the orb or something. lots of dub influence, lots of middle eastern influence (they don't just sample middle eastern records, they get awesome iranian singers like Sussan Deihim to come in and actually sing specially for them), and lots of fat beats. they're awesome. buy some loop guru today. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/bass-kittens/

Loop Guru has put out (so far) nothing but recycled Deep Forest-style Easy-World-Beat ethnocrap. I don't detect a shred of understanding for the musical cultures he samples,just a shallow "oh, that'll be cool under my mainstream ambient beats!" It's pleasant listening, and very valuable for introducing your parents to the more interesting stuff in your library, but nothing more. Besides, isn't Waveform the Windham Hill of techno anyway? -Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

All of them! The first album is Duniya. Its the best I reckon. The second Amrita is not quite so engaging. However they have done 3 not quite albums called the Catologue of Desires which I think are their finest works. These are all mixed together with beautiful swishy eastern ambience out of which occasional songs and beats take form in a excellently subtle manner. Unfortunately the first two of these are only available on cassette, and probably not any more anyway. The Third is on CD and is well worth it. Finally there is the Peel Sessions album, called Moksha, which shows the wierder side of the band. Strange clashing samples, wierd beats and the odd guitar solo - different, but still cool. Cheers Andrew C.

Tim, Someone has posted elsewhere about full-length LG, but I would like to introduce a dissenting note. LG-spotters onthislist will have noticed that Amrita gets damned with faint praise more often than not. Amrita is, however, in my estimation, worth pursuing since the good tracks stand comparison with their best work on Duniya or Cataogue of Desires. A good place to start would be to hunt down the following 12" singles/CD EPs: The Third Chamber [Highest Ambient Quotient] Shrinic Visions [incl. "dance/dub" mixes: Drum Club <gag>and Zion Train] Yayli [other takes on an outstanding track from Amrita] Possible Futures [never managed to trace this one but heard it's The Biz] These may prove elusive, but there is the thrill of the chase, and the rewards on capture are substantial. alan/beyondthebristolsound
