Speaking of idm and magazines, I was wondering what people think are good idm- centered magazines to get a subscription to here in the USA. I've read Muzik, but it's sorta overwhelming and maybe a little too club-centered. What's this Urb all about? Are there any magazines that concentrate almost strictly on listening techno, crazy electronica, and idm? Thanks for any input, Brian _______________________________________________________________________________ Subject: Re: (idm) You ain't gonna believe this one... Odd that no one's mentioned the current Spin, with Rage Against The Breadmachine And Its Infernal Muffins on the cover. There's a series of stories (nearly 10 pages), under the banner _Drums and Wires_. They seem quite concerned about what it will take to make electronica mainstream in the Yoo Ess Ayyy. They vote for glitzy stage shows and vocals, of course... Yr. money's probably better spent on the latest Urb with Juan Atkins on the cover, though. ---------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, network support specialist detroit art services <marmoset@mich.com> ---------------------------------------------------------- on now: Burial Mix 01

Urb. 'bout it. Some of the indy magazines like B Side have issues that touch on IDM, but Urb has Juan Atkins on the cover. Plus reports from netizens like Tamara Palmer, DJ Teep and Dan Sicko. And reading a little about hip hop won't kill ya. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Other people are NOT merely the comfy pillows on the couch of your life. You could try flicking through The Wire - recent issues have featured Squarepusher, Plug, Jake S. and The Black Dog, and they review many IDM releases. Two warnings though - They feature a wide range of styles from modern classical through jazz and techno, and also they are monthly, so their reviews are often a few weeks behind. Reviews are generally well written and perceptive, though prone to wallow in upitsownarse arty wank if left unattended, hope this helps you in your search, mike On 18 Sep 1996, BRIAN ANTONAK wrote:

Well, as someone who publishes something that sucks, and writes quite a few critiques, that, uh, I guess "suck", as well, I'm not sure if I should take that as a) a compliment; b) a swipe at alternative rock publications (I would therefore have to agree); or c) all magazines in which record reviews exist, or as your statement implies, simply ALL magazines. So to answer Brian's your original question as to what Urb is all about, I guess, according to you James, SUCKING--what else? Andrew Resonance Magazine

as my statement implies, to an extent, all MAGS SUCK. This is the same as most all media. Subjectivism in music (which is all music reviews, most all media content, hell, pretty much anything that someone comments on in the media/newspaper/mags) is not avoidable; once anyone reviews something it becomes subjective, which is the same as saying nothing. Not even artists should give reviews of their own stuff.

in a nutshell, yes. But it isn't just URB (but more so than most mags!); if you want to know what something sounds like, don't listen to some wanker who can't come up with a descriptive adjective to save his life. Listen to it for yourself before buying, or take the chance. After all, if it's a "screaming breakbeat superdubathon with tons o bass," how can you go wrong? 8>/

There's usually a few pages of IDM related material in URB every month. You might want to have a look at The Wire. Mostly I'd just say to go to the newstand and skim the rest of the mags for IDM stuff. In the new Ray Gun there is a multipage profile of Mo' Wax, an interview with Orbital, and a photo spread by Underworld (Karl in particular). BTW, on the subject of Mo'Wax, if Lavelle wants to throw around money to release stuff by established acts, why waste his time with Carl Craig when Rick James is without a label? Rick James on Mo'Wax, remember who thought of it first... Peace out, //"'' //''resh Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

I saw the Mo'Wax 12" release of this in NYC the other day, with 4 Hero, Peshay, Future/Past, and Carl Craig remixes. - Matthew

there are two mo wax 12"'s that come in thick shiny sleeves. the 4 hero mix was pretty nice although i'm not sure if liked the way the apache break was used (as if there weren't enough sample-friendly drum parts in the original). haven't noticed the others, although now i'm jonesin' for the ed rush. david *+* http://home.connectnet.com/lotus/
