i was told LTJ Bukem was at The Bank here in NYC last night, and was wondering whether anyone on the list who may have attended would care to give a review. (unfortunately, i was unable to attend) we've all read reviews of this "genius" on the wheels of steel in the glossies (mixmag et al.) but is he really All That?!? p -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Gensler Architecture, Design & Planning Worldwide -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Bukem was at Civic Center Park in San Francisco last Sunday afternoon. Free, even. Quick review: Well, the thing was supposedly noon-5 PM, but in true SF fashion nothing really got started until 1. Anticipating this, I didn't get there til 1:15 at which point I was treated to 2.25 hours of trip hop from Graham (Darkhorse) Seaman. Unfortunately, it was really bugging me, cos I wanted to hear some drum 'n' bass, dammit! Finally he split and Bukem took control. And man, was I impressed. Hell, my wife was impressed and it took her ages to come around to respecting d'n'b. (drum 'n' bass, not domination 'n' bondage, you perverted freaks.) Bukem had MC Conrad with him. Conrad had a wireless headset mike on and he wandered through the crowd checking out the sound. I was totally prepared to hate him (MC'ing in general is a dicey topic with me) but he was *on*. Not just the typical raggamuffin bizness and ting, but he sang (in tune even) and generally provided a really intelligent counterpoint to the music. Consider me *very* impressed. Anyway, the music... ran through the softer Logical Progression-esque stuff into some harder stuff (not quite in the hardstep vein). One track I really liked had this two-note looping jazz thing that reminded me of old Public Enemy. I'm sure all this stuff was white labels and dub plates so I didn't even bother to try to go spot it all. Anyway, I was busy hiding behind a pole to keep out of the sun (I don't hold much truck with daylight in general.) Bukem stood there pretty much motionless and impassible throughout. Mixing was pretty much flawless and unobtrusive. I actually don't like it when the DJ just stands there like a statue. I think it projects a feeling of detachment, like, "i'm apart from you, the crowd. you are here to watch me." I like the feeling of "we're all in this together" but whatever... I guess he can cop a little attitude, he was pretty excellent. The party moved to Mission Rock (where the DJ Food/Funky Porcini show will be saturday - you KNOW i'm there, wooo hoo!!) later that night but I was beat, and completely sunburnt, so I stayed home and did bong hits while watching some hong kong action flick ("executioners" i think). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon Drukman jsd@cyborganic.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------

i think that a dj that 'stands there like a statue' is hardly doing it for attitude's sake, rather, i believe this demonstrates intense concentration and the drive for perfection. LTJ's stoic nature didn't get in the way of ANYONE having anything short of an amazing time at mission rock. the vib there was as thick as it gets. i had a fucking blast. what a great place for a party. cheers! peter http://hyperreal.com/music/artists/face_on_mars http://hyperreal.com/music/labels/orbitrecords http://hyperreal.com/music/labels/grooveneedle heatsync - jupiter ep 8.15.96 on orbitrecords heatsync - source ep 10.15.96 on grooveneedle records

Ditto. I was fortunate enough to see Buken and Conrad at one of Universe's Voyager parties in London about a month ago and it was brilliant. I'd never seen an MC before who was totally annoying or just plain shit, but Conrad is in a class way above the rest. The only other MC who comes close is Calvin Watkiss who MC's at the Metalheadz night at the Bluenote. Bukem, of course, was flawless (which is more than I can say for Goldie... ouch) :: Alan M. I attended this event yesterday evening. Yes, he is really all that. Best set I've ever heard. I've never been good at that review thing, So I'll just say it was religous-like for me. He started slightly after 12:00 and was still going at ~2:30, when I took off. Conrad spread some rhymes over LTJ's rhythms. That thing kind of gets old after awhile. But LTJ's music was phenomenal.
