He's called Karl Bonnie. Prior to being a member of RSW, he played bass (I
think) in a band called The Jackal, who made a single called "Underneath The
Arches", which is sort of prototype RSW. He than joined forces with Gary
Asquith & Danny Briottet as Renegade Soundwave. Asquith had earlier been
guitar player & singer in 4AD band Rema Rema, and after that a member of
Mass (also on 4AD), which also featured Briottet. The rest of Mass later
formed The Wolfgang Press, and I think that one or two TWP members were part
of RSW when they toured a couple of years ago. While he was in RSW, Bonnie
did a single on Mute with Holger Hiller (who did some stuff on RSW's "In
Dub" as well) as Ohi Ho Bang Bang called "The Three" - taking sampling to
it's extremes (LOADS of silly sounds and samples from Slade - or are those
silly sounds as well?). The CD - which was either promo only or withdrawn
shortly after release - has an extra CD video track, which shows Karl &
Holger throwing around guitars, pieces of furniture and other stuff in time
to the samples. Not their greatest musical achievement I'd say, but
definitely very funny.
After Bonnie had left RSW, he supposedly made two 12" singles as Intergang,
called "Dark Horse" and "Peacemaker", both on a label called OCP. I've never
seen or heard them, nor have I ever heard anything else on this label. Any
clues anyone? I think he also did some work on Holger Hiller's "Demixed" and
"As Is" albums. What he's doing now is anyone's guess.
For me, too, "Howyoudoing?" was a bit of a disappointment, but after a while
I started to like it. It is, indeed, very much a pop record, but when you
listen to "Soundclash", I think you can't deny that they always had a liking
for making pop songs.
