Well just got back from Organic. Drove up the mountain yesterday feeling quite fucking awful (anyone else hate those mountain roads?), but was kept entertained along the way by watching all the ravers huddled around broken down cars at the turn-offs. Every turn off as a matter of fact. Some where using it as a convenient place for a nitrous break while they waited for the tow truck. Got to the site at Snow Valley and saw basically what you would expect of a mega rave held at an empty ski resort. Though well intentioned, the site turned out to be a bit of a pain in the ass. Ski slopes, during the summer months, are basically big sandboxes. The whole fucking thing is sand, sand, and more sand. And what do we get when we cross a couple thousand ravers dancing and dragging their feet? We get dust, dust, and more fucking dust. Dust everywhere. It was a task to breathe at times. Those hardcore kids with the breathing filters were very popular that day. By dusk it looked like hardcore heavenn with all the filters and bandanas about. Anyway I went over to some rocks near some trees (considerably less dusty) and planted myself down next to my girl. I had my name tag on for a while but no one from IDM came up to me and all the ravers seemed to think it was an invitation to come up and talk to me. Well I was feeling like fucking hell from having a wicked hangover the night before and only getting a couple nights sleep and the mountain drive, and the altitude so the last thing I wanted to do was talk to someone in their pajamas. I took it off and left it off. The DJ sets were pretty competent and basically represented the best LA has to offer. Most of them leaned more toward the acid side of things with the real standout being Daniel from Moontribe. That boy can spin. Anyhow on to the live performances: Loop Guru played a fairly tame set of world music inspired techno. The sort of thing Deep Forrest might play if they thought they should make a techno record. Oh well. Meat Beat Manifesto was quite good and I was really impressed. Not a pair of leather pants in sight (who knew)? Jack and crew (live drummer, guitar, etc.) played some wicked trip-hop on the breakbeat tip and some nice sample heavy techno and topped off the set with what must have been some of the older stuff, more on the industrial side. Not bad, and a good video show to boot. The crowd dug it. Underworld started hard and never let down. They started things out right with Rowla faded into Cowgirl and then tore shit up with Pearls Girl. Underworld are really a fantastic live act. Karl Hynde jumps around the stage like a mad man belting out his stream of thought lyrics like an angry ape in a trance. Born Slippy got a nice treatment as well. The only problem was their beats tended to sound a bit repetitive when played one after another for an hour. Other than that, brilliant stuff. After Underworld finished off I ventured close to the stage for the Chemical Brothers who were out next. This is clearly the band everyone was here for judging by the audience response (and the large number of people wearing t-shirts). If you liked the Chemical Brothers even a little bit this performance would have made you a hardcore fan. Tom and Ed played about 75% new/unreleased material, all of it in the same vein as the stuff on Exit Planet Dust, and some of it really quite wonderful and dark and everyone went crazy when they came around to the last song. You guessed it, Chemical Beats. Tom and Ed came back for brief encore of Chemical Beats mixed with the Beatles Tommorrow Never Knows. What would John Lennon think? The audience went crazy. After the Chemical Brothers finished things up about a third of the people left. The reason? It gets fucking cold in the mountains at night. In OC and LA if it's in the seventies every day and when it dips to around 65 people start saying "lets light the fireplace!" However, the temperature was in the mid-thirties and it was too much for many to take. Hell, it was too much for me to take but there was no way I was missing Orbital. They had their own three video screen set up synchronized to the songs. Falling clocks, tumbling shapes, floating household goods, a person doing sign language, spinning squigles (like the web page graphics)...fucking wicked. Orbital started out (yes, the headlight glass are still in effect, with added laser) with both versions of Out There Somewhere from In-sides, played basically note for note like the album version. Next was an fantastic updated version of Choice from Orbital 1. Orbital also played Girl With the Sun in Her Hair, a cracking version of Satan, a couple of the Lush tracks off Orbital 2, two version of The Box, PETROL, and capped things off with Halcyon On+On (not just Halcyon as they typically play live), which included the infamous Belinda C. sample. Orbital waved good-bye told us it was "brilliant, thanks alot," and left leaving us wanting more. Everyone assumed they'd come back for encore, and they probably were supposed to (no Chime?) but by the time Orbital left the stage it was around 3am and everything was running quite late. Well I'd had my fill and I'd seen the Orb just last year and with my toes tingling with fostbite me and my mates headed over to the motel to crash. Fucking great event but next year its going to take RDJ to get me up in those damn mountains again. Peace out. Now I'm gonna go pass out. /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

They started with "Rez." "Rowla" came later in the set (and was the high point of their performance). I left to go buy t-shirts soon after "Pearls Girl" started - I can't stand that 2 Bad Mice sample, I find that track's rhythm section a lot more repetitive than the 909 stuff in the other tracks (at least they can vary things from bar to bar using the 909, whereas the sample just loops and loops).

We decided Karl's a graduate of the Carlton Banks school of dance and the Darwin Mayflower school of hand gestures. :)

Closing with it was a mistake though - it's never been a big track over here. Hell, 'Trainspotting' hasn't been released here yet!

...and anyone who's posted trolling nonsense about how they're a rock band needed to hear some of the fucked up noise they put out in this set. Hell of a lot noisier than MBM's, I'd wager. (Not that I consider noisiness a measure of music's worth, but I know some do.)

I sure didn't - I hope they aren't planning on releasing that tripe. The buildup from "Chemical Beats" gets really tired the sixth time in a row.

The best video sequence (which I haven't seen anyone mention) was the one for "Out There Somewhere ?" which featured images from the "interstellar greeting" that was sent out on Voyager in the mid-'70's. Brilliant.

All the sequences were the same, and it was all played in the same order, but it was highly abridged - I'd say it went on half as long as the album version. I'll now rescind my statement that it's a track that goes on for 25 minutes despite only having 8 minutes of tune. It's actually a track that goes on for 25 minutes despite only having 12 minutes of tune.

Bo-ring. I can't believe people cheered this one. The bleep line is nice but the rest of the track's elements aren't interesting, and the track doesn't really go anywhere. I'd attributed this to their having rushed to finish it before the solar truck left, but the live version was no improvement.

While we're being semantic here, it wasn't on Voyager, but rather a transmission that was sent out from the big dish at Arapahoe. All I could think of when I saw that on the screen was, "That's sooo ffaahking cooool!" Again, if someone doesn't put that stuff on tape pronto, then market it to the masses, they're a fool.

The version from "Wipeout" is identical to the album version. The live version made me scream like a teenager in an unattended shopping mall. Where were you hiding anyway Chris? Next time I'm bringing a large flag that has "IDM" on it.

Organic was the greatest show, I've ever seen. I thought Nasa See the light tour would always be my favorite because Aphex and Orbital were there. But Organic topped it!! This was the greatest line up, every band except Loop Guru was really outstanding. I thought the DJ sets (on the main stage) were really weak, I guess I wished someone like Jeff Mills was spinning. It all seemed to typical, I was actually surprised that they were playing such old stuff and the mixing wasn't that great. When I saw the Orb in Phoenix for the last tour, Alex was spinning for a while and his set was really good. The DJ that opened up for the Orb (Phx show, last tour), was playing really great stuff and hard. DJ Lewis was spinning everything from Carl Craig - Science Fiction to RELOAD records type of techno. Enough about the Djs, I didn't go there to see them. Loop Guru was ok, nothing special. As Fresh put it, "The sort of thing Deep Forest might play if they thought they should make a techno record". They were the only questionable band there, someone should of got Aphex or The Advent to play instead. MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO was great, I thought they did a really good set. The only disappointment was that there set was kind of short and it should have been a little louder. It wasn't all electronic, they had a drummer who did a really good job. I was pretty impressed with them, it was the first time I had seen them. UNDERWORLD started with REZ which turned into Cowgirl. I didn't really like there last CD Dubnobass..., because there were too many vocals on it. At first, I didn't like the vocals, now I do. Karl Hyde (the singer) was really entertaining, he was bouncing around, acting kind of crazy. I was really blown away by Underworld, they were EXCELLENT. Now I know why everyone in the UK is going nuts over them. We almost drove up to San Francisco to see them again the next night. I definitely want to see them again. The highlight of there set was Pearls Girl. THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS were the BOMB! It was a real treat to hear there new songs, I have been eagerly awaiting a new single or CD by them. I need a fix, you could say. There remix of Dave Clarke's - No One's Driving is great, it makes me crave new material even more. I saw them last year in SF, and they were great but there set was kind of short. This time it was longer, and nonstop noise and beats. My friend said it was like being in the middle of a riot. Chemical Beats was the last song before the encore, the last song started out with the Drumbeat from the Life is Sweet (remix 1) and the Bassline of Chemical Beats with a Beatles sample "Love is all" ORBITAL started there set with a real soundtrackish song, sounded like something you would hear in a James Bond movie. I saw them once before, but they were so different this time. They were so good, that they sent chills down my spine. I didn't get a chance to give the new CD a good listen before the show, so I didn't know what to expect. Everything they played was great, I really liked it when they played The Box, it sounded so cool. I was extreme impressed with them. I didn't really care for their use of Belinda Carlisle in Halcyon, oh well. THE ORB were really experimental that night. I just saw them not that long ago, and thought I knew what to expect. It was nothing like the other show, completely different. They even played started doing some drum and bass in parts of this dub song. They didn't play anything off the last CD, I don't know if he was playing new music from a future release or just experimenting. We stayed until 6:00 am, I really wanted to stay until the end of the Orb set, but we were beat. It was a great event, I hope they do another one. I get so frustrated reading about all these great shows in Europe, it nice to finally go to something like this. And an added bonus, a friend taped the show from KROQ, now I have some Live Chemical Brothers to listen to. To cherish the event. I don't have any live Underworld, did they play it on the air. Does anybody have a good recording of it, if they did braodcast it? B i l l S a m u e l s w l s @ U . A r i z o n a . FFFFFFFFRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH, wuz up? Have you recovered from that AWESOME event "Organic"? You should have kept your name tag on, because me and my mates were looking for ya!! You weren't by chance that bugger up front during the Chemicals who stood still as a tree, were ya? If you were, than I was that guy banging in to you dancing like a maniac. Sorry mate, but the chemicals were the best ever!!! I agree with your review, especially about the dust. That sucked hard. I can't believe you didn't stick around for the Orb, though. If you like squarepusher, you're hatin' life right now. They did some wicked dub in the beginning, and mixed it with some fat jungle rhythms. It blew me away. Totally unexpected from their previous shows. Anyway, I too was extremely tired from driving all the way from Tucson that morning, but froze my ass off anyway till 6:30 that morning. The show of the year, by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wacky. I just came back from seeing them at a local Tower Records, and they were stupid fresh. Three drummers: one with toms & a timbale, one with metal bars and oil drums, and one with various latin stuff; a guy making wonderful horrible noises with a bass and guitar; and a cute girl who wailed some lovely quarter tone stylee. They got some serious tribal trance grooves happening with three part percussive madness, and the guitar guy set up walls of squalling noise. Didn't sound anything like Deep Forest, unless they suddenly mated with Crash Worship and Muslimgauze when I wasn't paying attention. /j/ OnNow: Full Moon Scientist -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/bass-kittens/

It was a great show. Here's another another brief take: Made it in time for Meat Beat. Great! Enjoyed every minute. It was Jack and three others: A guitarist (hard to tell what he did, but he probably just made strange guitar noises), a drummer (he was excellent, and added a lot to what was going on, especially the couple solos), and a keyboardist (with a theramin!). Great set, new stuff and old favorites. Next was Underworld. Never heard them before. Sorry, but I didn't really enjoy it much. It sounded like they had one 909 with three slightly different drum patterns, and they played it through their whole show. I was really looking forward to Tomato's video work which I had heard of, but hadn't seen before. I wasn't disappointed. Beautiful massive type layering. Of course the Organic rave-video person kept throwing in their own multi colored rave stars and ruined it. Oh well... Chemical Brothers. Heard a track or two before, but never got into them, myself. But, live there were really energetic and fun. Nice to hear good breaks without that boring, tired 909 thud in everything. They definatly made the crowd (and me) move. Liked all the visuals, too. Lots of periodic table stuff and chemical related imagery (of course). I enjoyed it quite a bit. Orbital. Excellent!!! of course. Started off with my favorite track from the new album, Out There Somewhere? Played quite a bit of older material, actually, and stuff from the new one. Don't remember anything from Snivilization, unfortuneatly. Loved the version of Satan they played, sounded even thick/heavier, but mabye just because it was live. This was supposed to be broadcast live on KROQ/106.7. Did any poor unfortunate IDMer who couldn't go to the event tape this? I would enjoy a copy. Any bootleg entrepreneurs? Lastly, the Orb. I think I might have enjoyed their set the best. I'd never seen them live before, but I've always liked them. What was best was that everything was different then their album work. Lots of new sounds/beats mixed in. I wish this was broadcast live, because I'd love a copy of what they did more than anything else! Started off real mellow and ambient, then worked up to some great beats! Ended with Little Fluffy Clouds when the sun was coming up. Great experience. Great night. Nice long sets. Don't feel so jealous anymore of you UK folk who always seem to get the super-great lineup shows. Ha Ha. I was there AND have a copy of the live broadcast. The tape has around 60% Chemicals set, 100% of Orbital's set, and around 4 Meat Beat tracks. Also, unfortunately included is the entire set of Jason Bentley DJ'ing. Fresh, if you read this, This guy really sucks. Props for playing Leftfield, but everything else in his set, and for that matter everyone else's, was utterly predictable. I can't believe that This guy is one of L.A's top dj's.

Traditionally, you are supposed to smear Vicks Vaporub on the inside of the mask. Supposedly like electricity when you're on E (from what I hear, that is).

No, I do remember seeing the lo-res bitmap, but I didn't remember seeing the naked man and woman from the Voyager disk. I guess everyone was right.

Speaking of, is there anyone who reprints this on CD? I remember at the time that there were vinyl versions of the record, but I never got one.

not to mention a cool diagram showing you how to BUILD YOUR OWN RECORD PLAYER so you can listen to the disc when you find it. hmmm, that would make a cool album cover, wouldn't it? /j/ on now: severed heads

Jason Bentley is *not* one of L.A.'s top DJ's. He may have some respect for exposing the scene to new people, since he's holding down radio gigs on both the #1 college station (KCRW) and the #1 "alternative" station (KROQ), but no one in L.A. respects him for his skillz.

Yeah, but it was so *cold* by then. We tried to sit down and create a de facto chillout area, but nobody around us would cooperate. So we stood for two more hours, waiting for Fluffy White Clouds. I can wait to here the show on tape, though. -- ‹Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

I kind of got that feeling since he was on my tape with the "Jed the Fish" dude. Btw, that JEd the fish dude really sucks! He kept interrupting the live broadcasts and kept being really annoying. Oh well, at least i still have the show on tape.

Damn right it was cold! It never(and i mean never) gets that cold in Tucson, even in the dead of our so cald winter. But I still stuck it out for Lx and Hughes!! "Fluffy White Clouds," mate?!! If I hear one more wimp whinge and moan about how "cold" it was at Organic, I'll scream. I was in shirt sleeves the entire time, right until we left at 5:30 or so. Never even put on my pullover. The air was incredibly calm and still the entire time (not even a breath of wind) and standing in the middle of a crowd of several thousand people giving off heat made it plenty warm. The Minnesotans and Finns and Norwegians on this list must be laughing their heads off. (Then again, maybe all the whingers were all under the influence of small letters of the end of the alphabet.) (Desert Move in Vegas was a different story. Air temp was 38F at 5:00 AM and the wind was going strong. *That* was nippy.) - Greg Still too lazy to bother with a full Organic review (& still wondering why nobody's mentioned how Jack Dangers went the "organic" band route when they coulda played disc 2 of "Subliminal Sandwich" and blown everybody's socks off ... )

Gregg, you left so early!! You should have toughed it out until 7!! That's the only reason I mentioned the weather, if you were fromTucson, you'd understand. Calling someone a wimp who drove 500 miles each way, that morning, to see this event; and then stayed until the sun was peaking(no matter how cold it got!) is rather harsh in my opinion. and what is this "whinge" stuff? you mean whine I think. Uh, it usually gets *warmer* after sunrise ... as for leaving, I was willing to stay but the other half was exhausted (we got there at 5 PM, I think nearly 13 hours standing is enough for most anyone). Plus, like I said, The Orb were annoying me. Making us wait at least an hour before they came on like Prima Donas was bad enough; but aimlessly wanking about for eons between actual "songs" (sometimes the between-track noise could have been called "Sounds from runway 4-R, 120 db") was a little too much for me after a while.

Wimpiness has nothing to do with the drive. If I go to an all-night event in shorts and a t-shirt and never need to put on a sweater or a pullover (much less long pants), I hardly think that qualifies as "cold". It's not like as if there were ski parkas, gloves and ear muffs bustin' out all over, y'know? :-)

The proper English spelling. :-) On now: Jeff Mills "Boring, monotonous 4/4 stomp Live in Tokyo" - Greg Slowly reviewing Organic, one message at a time
