Sorry if this has been asked before but... What's this "Amen" break I keep on reading about in Jungle reviews. I suppose it's from some tune called "Amen" but who did it orignally? And is it still in print? Can someone point out a Photek tune that uses it if he uses it at all? UFO maybe? While we're on the subject of Mr. Parkes... Does anyone have any idea what his setup is? thanks, Howie ps extra special thanks to everyone who helped out w/my Plug/HAB question!

I do believe it's about time to put Mr. Parkes under the IDM microscope, especially in light of all the ANTI-squarepusher sentiment around here. IMO what Rupert has been doing (although extremely original) is as formulaic as what T.J. Pusherman has done. Also, there seem to be in my ears a familiar *thinness* to his breaks...dare I attribute this to a digital Vs analog approach? Last, I find it quite amusing that people would go to great extent nit- picking T.J.'s work in the same breath as a big thumbs up for this hidden camera 2x12" of which I can only find 1 track which _really_ hits the spot. DO NOT get me wrong, I have an erupting Photek collection (and a left winger on my SNES NHL96 named "Rupert Parkes" :) which I enjoy immensely. I just wonder if we're overanalyzing some while underanalysing others? Teep Boston area be forewarned...2 hour sets from DJ bunyip & Teep this w/e on the 90.3 FM 2am - 6am sundaze (after sasha 11-2 saturday night) chekkit.

It seems to me that Jenkinson loves the tried-and-true Amen, but just cuts it to ribbons on almost every track. Parkes is more of a DIY-breaks kind of guy, and crafts his own loops, which might account for the lack of fullness (Amen break is *very* busy, while PhotekBeats seem to "breathe" more to me). Plus, I think Parke's just enjoys making very metallic, techno-influenced (check the kick-drum on "UFO") rhythms, which could come aross as thin-sounding or tinny when compared with the non-stop bustle of the Amen.

The one with all the sampled jazz hits, right? I thought this cut was mindblowing when I heard it, but you're right that the other three are a bit too similar to his recent output (if we are indeed talking about the same track ;) ).

anti? I don't remember anyone saying that sp shouldn't exist.

Just listen to it for a week straight, you'll get sick of being bored by the other tracks and start liking them. I hear this works for house music too.

possibly. but remember, all you have to do is listen to "Intelligent Dance Music" and you are automatically intelligent! No need for silly reasons in our postmodern society, just swallow the hype and be reborn. eric p.s. "Amen, Brother" by the Winstons, the flip of "Color Him Father"

I disagree. Photek's jungle is at times so thick that I have to get out my mental machette just to cut through the massively tangled breakbeat underbrush.

One was hyped to fuck, the other simply got a few tiny adverts in the music press. This explains the difference, I think.

I didn't get _bored_ by any of the tracks on Hidden Camera, though they do seem a bit more static than most other Photek stuff.

Definitely.

In reference to Rupert's chopped up breaks style... KJZ on Hidden Camera is based on some breaks that Kirk Degeorgio gave him and chopped up... Food for thought. Peter Wohelski Astralwerks

Yes anti... as in "against or opposite" as in antichrist. I don't think anyone has a say about SP "existing".

Which reminds me...would you all prefer if label heads WERE NOT excited about their upcoming records? I'm considering starting up a label and this kind of information would be useful to me. Teep on now: Sharky Sarc and the Chasms - Hauteur's groove

Hmmm...first off, I can't imagine you NOT being excitable about music you want to put out. I don't think that's an option here. I can see it now though -- the ad in mixmag: "Another set of releases that sound pretty much like the last batch from Eh...Whatever records. You might like 'em, you might not. I don't give fuck all either way." --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I read Keyboard, but it's like staring at a book with pictures of simple looking but expensive machines." -- Michael Lazarev NEW CD Comp Electronic Music Project http://soli.inav.net/~kent/emp.html Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

I would say his finest moments are when the 'techno boxes' creep up into the mix in "support" of the groove and the amen moments only settle his ass down into the d&b pigeon hole. I find it hard to deny the genius of say, conumber (which BTW is where I recd. my introduction to SP and may help explain why I will not stand for it being thought of as less then fresh) but understand an allergic reaction to bubbles and squeaks.

No, not UFO, check Photek 02 ("Book of changes"), has been re-iussed recently.

I think its great if label heads ARE excited about their upcoming releases (if the excitement is for the music and not for how much bread their gonna cream from their punters). The truly sad thing about hype is when sheep-like masses get excited about something because other people are excited about it rather than getting excited about it on a personal/individual level. (sorry - rambling a bit - does it make sense?) Nikad ps - if you are THINKING about starting up a label DO it! Maybe then you could get excited about releasing some of my stuff :-)
