Next big thing - Jake Slazenger.
Check this guy out, dunno who he is but this album is really
wicked. The label is called "WARP" - anyone heard of them? I think
you should really check this label out.
But seriously :)
Das ist ein groovy beat, Ja? is a seriously funky album. Those of you
who have been disappointed by MP's patchy output of late (the
re-release of Bluff Limbo excepted of course) should hopefully find
something to celebrate in this. I found "Nautilus" a pleasant, but
not earth shattering track, and I am still appreciating the funky
flavours on the rest of the EP - I do like the hip-hop flavour
of "the penultimate". Nice now I've got it on vinyl (as it's now on
full release), it allows me to concentrate more somehow (!?).
Anyway, back to DiegbJ. The first track just blew me away. This is
the biggest fattest slice of funk you have heard yet. Crank it up and
let those stabs rip your eardrums apart. There's more funk to follow,
and it just don't stop. Those wonderful searing analogue synth lines
from "Makesaracket" are here, but the beats behind are funkier still!
the moods range from slinky sleazy lounge grooves to all out party
hip-hop anthems, with a few of the more trad u-ziq style tracks
dotted about. My initial impression of the rest of the album is
shaded somewhat by the impact of the first track, but it sounds
strong all the way through. A seriously good album which I think will
stand the test of time.
