Hey sorry to be so late on this thread and maybe it is already dead. If it is, let's not start again. the reason why I am so late is the local record shop just got Orbital's the Box on Thurs. I can only say I don't understand why some of you were disappointed. I have yet to hear Snivilization and I am only familiar with the first two full lengths. As far as the Box goes, I can say I wasn't disappointed. Yes, it was different. But is that not a good thing. Shit, everything RDJ does is different, that is why we love him so much. That guy never meanders thru unnecessary redundancy. If that is a good principle for musicians to have, why can't we hold the same principles for Orbital? I don't know folks, I can only say that I was happy to hear something a bit different from the Hartnoll Bros. I am not sure if I liked the ep, it didn't have too many highlights. Nevertheless, I think some of you should give 'em a break, if their new release sounded anything like the first two you'd all give it bad reviews. This was especially true of the latest B12. Many on the list said they were disappointed b/c it reminded them of Electro-soma. Are there some of you who are having double standards, I hope not. Give Orbital another try, you may not have to like the BOX, but at least they are moving from '91-'93 techno as many of the latest artist are doing. IMHO they are all starting to kick our asses beyond belief. I only have to say FREEFORM to prove that. thanks for your time gil on now: Disjecta _Clean pit& lid Pit_ (anyone understand the title?) /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ NAME:Gil aka GMV500 E-MAIL: videla@colorado.edu WEB PAGE: yeah, right! check out my friends- http://ares.csd.net/~albumsup - http://www.uea.ac.uk/~u9506276 PHILOSOPHY: AMBIENT+BREAKDANCE= IDM FINAL WORDS: MORE BEER! \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\\/\\/\/\/\\//\/\/\/\/\/\/\\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

Hello! Just got "The Box" on Saturday. Quite excellent. The harpsichord touches and the live drumming were particularly distinctive touches. This record reminds me, in many ways, of Hypnotone's "ai" full-length. Zenon M. Feszczak Ambient Menace

I was considering getting this myself. Would someone mind posting a track listing with song times? Plus a little review might be helpful. Thanks. +----------------------------------+ | Eric Frans | | franse@bigdog.engr.arizona.edu | +----------------------------------+

From my review posted to the list on Saturday 20th : Orbital - The Box (internal) Boy, there's been some controversy about this one on idm. this EP consists of 4 tracks with no further information than the EP title and all the various legal and credits. I must admit that Orbital are by a long stretch not my favourite artists, yet most of their work has considerable charm for me, but they tend to draw things out, often losing my interest 3/4 through a given track. My opinion on "Snivilisation" generally agrees with the individual who recently posted that he felt it works better as a whole than as individual tracks. For me, "The box" is a clear evolution onward from "Sniv" and "Are we here", by no means a complete turn of style, particularly in terms of rhythms. The first track seems to use a number of broadly familiar motifs, and the end result is actually quite soundtrack-ish, also with hints of a Sabres-ish metallic edge. This comes to the fore in the second track, which builds to almost gothic horror movie proportions, though it doesn't really ignite for me. The third version is much funkier, more dancefloor oriented and my favourite off the EP, sparser than 1, but by no means stripped, and more "up" than 2. Track 4 is basically track 1 reprised with some lush female vocals and the dodgy male vocal (probably not quite as terrible as that on the "Volume" excursion "Wasted") which you may or may not be able to ignore. Right at the end is a brief but beautiful whistled passage of the main melody from the track. A strange but by no means bad EP and one which bodes mixed messages to me of their forthcoming material. There are some cool sounds in here and the last thing Orbital are doing is standing still. I await with interest the new LP. __________ ________.__/_____ _||_/ James Skilton aka Steady J _[]/_____________[.__\____-_ DJ and Party Animal | | Part Time Hedonist |____________________________| Full Time Technohead |__|-' '-|__| Steady-J@Firefox.co.uk

It reminds me of a stab at something greater, like classical composition. I wonder if we'll ever see Bach/Mozart/Beethoven/etc remix competition that isn't pure cheese. I would like to see the Hartnolls attempt a full-on orchestration.

My first listen reaction was that it was incredibly awful, and people who read this list know that I rarely say anything bad. Usually I just praise the good and let the bad pass without comment. I will give this another chance, though and see if it does more for me on repeated listenings.

Ah but then they'd have to learn to read music! MMM...maybe not, just pull their sequences into Finale and spit out a score. I'd love to see Orchestral percussionists trying to play jungle drum lines... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Unintentional Internet Humor (and I'm not making this up!): "Could someone please define 'AMBIENT' (This question is completly rhetorical)" -- some guy called 'JPM' "Why my source is crazy?
