V/A - DETROIT: BEYOND THE THIRD WAVE
Overlooked by much of the dance music's post-rave generation of fans, Detroit
is undoubtedly the spiritual epicenter of Techno music. Over ten years ago,
as Chicago's Acid House movement was in its nascent stages, Techno was being
created in Detroit by Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Derrick May - three
friends influenced by jazz, blues, Motown, Disco, funk, early synth-pop (ala
Depeche Mode, New Order, Human League), Kraftwerk, Soul Sonic Force, and the
rebellious futuristic ideologies of Alvin Toffler's Third Wave. The sounds
they produced fused pure emotion and soul with analog technology and funky
machine music. The result was a musical revolution that has exploded into a
worldwide movement, indelibly changing the face of music as we know it today.
As Toffler prophesized, the "Techno Rebels," or 'agents of the Third Wave'
have multiplied over the years, and over time, this revolution has evolved
and can no longer be strictly categorized. In drawing inspiration from
Techno's classic sound, this third generation of Detroit innovators continue
to redefine the music.
