Sorry. I'm having real probs w/ names todya... The Moving Shadow comp w/ the words "Revolutionary Generation" in the title. Weird stuff. Cat# MSCD3, I think. Omni Trio's full length on Smile would be very good except for his use of diva samples and piano sounds. I wish he'd go for a more synthy sound. Goldie suffers from the same prob. Too bad - he occasionally shows flashes of brilliance. Che

Plug s'posed to be coming out on a CD for the US market "soon". Check out the new SOUR comp New Skool Flava, for some wicked hiphop D+B Also, the Promised land comp, 2CDs one mixed by Bukem, the other unmixed. Squarepusher track on the Refried Food CD is f'in mad. There's a Good lookin comp, out soon. Never seen Parallel Universe on CD, but if anyone does pls let me know? Anyone stateside seen 4hero's Mr Kirk's Nightmare 96 mixes, on Smile? I want a copy. err errr there's loads more too, I'm too bz to think right now, but I'll let you know later. Oh, stay clear of the Desert Storm CD comps *all* the tracks are cut short totally pissed me off cos I bought the "intelligent" one for Horizons and Photek's Rain, and its fade out central... jeff

I've never seen it on vinyl ;-) The one I have SEL3 on Selector/Crammed (a belgian label) but is also (P) Reinforced. I don't know if Watts or Cargo ever imported this, but my copy has a sticker from World Music Distribution (415) 381 4117.

This is available from Watts -- they had vinyl copies in my local shop not long ago. Oh, its Jeff! Sorry -- US distributors aren't much use for you, innit? Umm...I don't know about imports going the other direction (to the UK). By the way I've not heard much, but Liquid Sky Records, has been putting out some US produced jungle, and they've just come out with a compilation CD. Someone who can check it out should post a report to IDM. Funny, does anyone remember when bringing up jungle on IDM got you scolded, and told to take it to the breaks list? ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new beauracracy -- Franz Kafka Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

Apart from the 4 Hero/Jacobs you mentioned, there are a few others. Compilation-wise, 'Artcore' on React and 'Counterforce' on Internal are OK (but they're getting quite old now). 'Promised Land Volumes 1&2', mixed by Bukem and Fabio respectively could be worth checking, but I'd go for 'Revolutionary Generation' on Moving Shadow/Creative Wax, or better still, wait for 'Logical Progression' to come out. Here's a review I did for 'Finetime' magazine a couple of weeks ago... VARIOUS ARTISTS Logical Progression Part 1 Good Looking/FFRR Out April 8th (?) 'Logical Progression' indeed. The success of Goldie last year was to pave the way for artists like Photek and Alex Reece, who have both recently signed major deals, and it was only a matter of time before LTJ Bukem, surely the most important musician in the ambient jungle scene, would be snapped up too. This collection catalogues the highlights of Bukem's 'Good Looking' label, which for the last few years has been a consistent supplier of premium-grade breakbeat, providing the soundtrack to the pioneering 'Speed' night in London. Kicking off with the first release, Bukem's own 'Demon's Theme', the blueprint of the sound soon becomes apparent. Early gems such as Bukem's seminal 'Music' and 'Demon's Theme' rub shoulders with Link's 'Chameleon' and PFM's 'One And Only'. And it's here that the 'progression' in the title really becomes apparent. The contrast between the rougher, rawer early releases and the hi-tech polish of the more recent cuts is fascinating, illustrating the advances in techniques and technology that the scene has witnessed. From Peshay's soul diva cut-ups on 'Vocal Tune', to the sheer technical wizardry and electronic soul of Bukem's 'Cool Out', to Conrad's MC chat over PFM's 'Western', all bases are covered. Anyone still foolish enough to doubt the validity of jungle as a means of musical expression needs their horizons broadened. This is music made using machines, yet with all the soul and emotion of a million tedious guitar bands. If you're not yet tuned in to this revolutionary sound, there is no better place to start.

Why bother? I bought Jacob's Optical Stairway and was SO impressed I could have imploded right there. Then I bought this 4 Hero Mr. Kirk single thing, for less than a dollar, because I'd heard that Dego et.al are 4 Hero. Egad, I thought, as to my utter terror I listened to the ultracliched protodancic shit of "Energize" mix, this is just, just- awful... one of those gimmicky sample house-esque shit mainstream "dance" tunes! Aargh! So I removed the tape form my car stereo, and threw it out the window at some minivan. However, I found "Parallel Universe" today, and got it, just to see, you know... and wow, almost imploded again... damn fine jungle stuff, just like JOS only slightly less refined, but... well, woweee. Thing is, I ponder to this day: how does the wonderous jungle creations of 4 Hero get mutated into the utterly non-jungle, non-jazzy, non-intelligent, and, dare I say it, non-musical shit techno of that Mr. Kirk single? God, someone should do something about this, before the trend continues and we find AFX tunes being overlaid with diva vocals, hi hats, plain ole undistorted 4/4 beats, thier musical guts replaced by two note plain synthy happidanci riffs, and marketed to the masses as such... God, what a nightmare... oh, the humanity....

Mr. Kirks Nightmare is famous early hardcore track. DJ DB has a weakness for this stuff -- that's why he brought out a disk with remixes of 'Bomb Scare' by 2Bad Mice in 94. If you're looking for new trippy jungle I can understand your disappointment. To the extent that Jungle grew out of the hardcore scene (and included some of the same players -- Rob Playford, Dego, et al) it's a historical document. But feel free to throw it at minivans if it makes you feel better. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Every revolution evaporates and leaves behind only the slime of a new beauracracy -- Franz Kafka Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

It is called "Jacob's Optical Stairway" (that's it, self titled). Buy it NOW, it is the earthly manifestation of godhood; real jazzy stuff with really intricate beats and structures (the tempo change in track 2 on side 3 makes me go nuts). Available on cd even. Also get 4 Hero's "parallel Universe" full length cd; it's alot like JOS.
quoted 1 line is it anything like a guy called gerald's "black secret technology"?>is it anything like a guy called gerald's "black secret technology"?
Errm... well, Gerald's things are prety good, but like goldie's stuff there are too many shamelessly screaming dance divas for my taste. JOS is much more on the jazzy, funky, wacko side of the spectrum, though the rhythm programming, like Gerald's, is first-rate.
