Great. Nothing kills art so quickly as an agenda. Is this what Ken meant by "Important Music" in that mail during the Dog/Plaid tour snafu last year? If so, my eager-meter will be turned down by a notch or two. Can you elaborate on that concept, I'm not quite able to digest it. BURP. In my opinion, so long as (true) art exists in this world, being influenced by or attempting to bring about awareness to *anything* (and I mean that) is simply an inevitable art by product. Certainly an agenda is not a prerequisite to art (and by no means makes it instantly legitimate), but what's the difference between >>me making 3 different mix tapes to place into 3 different tape covers which steal and alter 3 different album covers and >>some guy writing an LP's worth of music to bring about awareness?

Hmmm...there's probably a reason why there exists on the one hand fictional books (poems, novels, short-stories) and on the other hand non-fictional (essays, academic litterature etc.). The moment a novel, or in this case a piece of music, decides to become explicit in the sense that they choose one specific political theme (Bosnia, Tibet...), there is a clear & present danger (heh!) that the theme takes control over the piece of art itself. It becomes so important for the artist to "save the world" that he or she looses sight for what art really should be (in my and, if I understand him correctly, Harold Blooms opinion): source for insight, and not a microphone for a capital-letter manifesto. Simplification (but still part of my point): Why did Sartre and Foucault participate in rallies and protest-marches? They were both very competent (!) writers, so wouldn't a book be enough to put the wrongs into rights?

I'm not condoning (sp?) anyone's sincere intentions, it's just their means to their ends I'm doubting. When you copy or put together your mix tapes, you're not politically motivated in doing do so. When Black Dog decides to make music about Tibet, they're focusing their music towards one specific, political agenda. They stand the *risk* of Tibet standing in the way of their music, you don't. I decided to join Amnesty International instead of making some kind of musical statement about prisoners of conscience. This is my way of doing things, others have other ways. If they think music or art in general is the way to do it, fine; I don't. Think about it: How many people do you know who's actually been motivated to act after listening to a piece of music or reading a novel? And how many people listening to music does *not* know about Tibet?

O>[cut cut] O>so wouldn't a book be enough to put the O>wrongs into rights? Indeed from the sounds of it you would agree, it's simply not *enough* to just write/create etc because you believe in something stong enough that you want to make progress. I bet Sartre and Foucault realized that much as well. You really do need to get your hands dirty if you ever really want to make a significant contribution. If you spend all your time wanking on some keyboard about a problem it really won't do a damned thing. But if the goal is awareness, art's a legitimate enough forum to handle something that simple. I guess that's my point.
quoted 1 line When Black Dog decides to make music about Tibet,>When Black Dog decides to make music about Tibet,
Right but I don't think Ken stated it was music "about Tibet" as much as it was a release to raise awareness about Tibet. Maybe I'm wrong in assuming there is a difference. I just refuse to dismiss the idea without being more informed.
