Picked these up from CDNow last weekend: u-Ziq - In Pine Effect (Astralwerks) 12 tracks, 71+ minutes I had heard from listmembers that this was an inferior work compared to Tango 'n Vectif. I was pleasantly surprised. This album is quite similar to TNV, with many standout tracks. Within a Sound, Dauphine, Funky Pipecleaner and Iced Jem are quite good. Green Crumble is a 1920's-sounding track straight out of an old-time saloon, with u-ziq-ness on top of it. Even Roy Castle is starting to grow on me. (8/10) ------ Omni Trio - Music for the Next Millenium (Sm:)e) 12 tracks, 69+ minutes I didn't have a jungle CD, so I decided to get one. I had heard many jungle compilations, and they all sucked rocks. But when I had heard about Omni Trio from my buddy, I gave it a listen, and it was actually good! Nearly all of the tracks are pretty wicked, with Renegade Snares, Together, and Living for the Future being xtra wikkid. Recommended for first time junglers and jungle fans. (8/10) ------ Drum Club - Live in Iceland (Instinct) 8 tracks, 1 hour I am not a real fan of the Drum Club, but this CD was on sale for only 8 bucks, so I picked it up. There's no crowd noise that I can hear, so that's a bonus. It's pretty good, but I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't on sale. There are some parts which are kinda acidy, not really danceable, but good for listening. (6/10) -boB (-:

This is actually the only single artist jungle cd which I have and haven't got rid of. It is great sterile jungle cut with a surgeons knife. snow

From the X(mas)-Files... Mu-ziq - Salsa with Mesquite (Virgin) On sale for 7.99, couldn't pass it up. I find myself comparing all of his recent material to the jem that is Tango N Vectif. So far, none have equalled it (remember I haven't heard Bluff Limbo). The first track is horrendous, doesn't go anywhere. Tracks 2-4 are less offensive, but sounds mostly like noodling. The last 3 tracks save the day for this EP, with Balsa Lightning being the standout. Nice synthy backdrop over the ziq-ster's trademarked sqidgyness. Can't help but think, though, that these tracks were leftovers from In Pine Effect, which is the better release. (5.5/10) 2 Bad Mice - Kaotic Chemistry (Sm:)e) Throughout this 79+ minute, 15 tracker, I found myself saying "So thats where that song came from!" Some classic choons here, including 3 mixes of Bombscare. Mostly breakbeat, great for those of you who long for the catchy tunes of the early 90's. (8/10) Kid Spatula - Spatula Freak (Reflective) Overheard at the u-ziq boat show thingy: "Hey Mike, I'm from Reflective Records here in SF. Do you have some trax lying around that we could put on an album? Great! I'll write you a check. Cover art, you ask? Don't worry 'bout it, my 6-year-old will take care of it." The result is Kid Spatula, which isn't to say that it doesn't have its moments. The odd-numbered trax seem to stand out above cousin Even. Some of the songs are obviously from the vault (see track 7). Still comes up short of TnV. BTW don't pay more than 14 bucks for it, it's widely available as a domestic (US) release. (6/10) Air Liquide - Red (Sm:)e) After the mediocre but economical "Increased Difficulty of Concentration", I wasn't expecting much from Jammin Unit and Walker. Girlfriend, I was in for a supprise! Some trip hop, trance, ambient all mixed into some creating packaging and domestic to boot! (7.5/10) X-Mix-3 (K7) After acquiring the accompanying video to this "soundtrack", I just had to have the choons on disc. Some great acid, hardcore, trance all mixed together by John Acquaviva and Richie Hawtin. Tough to get these days, try EAR/Rational if it's not at your local store. (8/10) The Grid - Rollercoaster (Deconstruction) This is a single, but the trax are quite different from each other. Track 3 is a great footstomper remixed by Lionrock (aka Justin Robertson). There's also a Global Communication remix which is just what you'd expect it to be: brilliant. Comes in a lame cardboard sleeve, though, but I just cut it down a bit and use it as the liner in a jewel case. Found it cheap, too! (7.5/10) see ya later, -boB

Yeah, a good bit of classics on CD. I'm not sure why Sm:)e is digging thru the old vaults, what fiendish marketing technique is being employed, but gosh darn it, the music's still damn good. I wish Sm:)e would release some of the other Movin' Shadow stuff, the '94 stuff would be great! It would be neat if someone would dig thru the archives of Reinforced and Production house as well... Some very neat stuff on Reinforced that would definately appeal to IDM-heads.

I'll make myself useful and post a few capsule reviews of independent IDM-type stuff I've heard: Johnny Ether - Free Radical Generator (Clockwise) Heavy, ethnic-flavored drum and bass + dub. Tablas and sitars are present but the tone is more 50's Tangiers than Anokha. If you like the newest WE album, you will certainly like this. Fascia - s/t (Clockwise) Deep, deep beat-oriented ambient with live drum kit. There are some more fine drum and bass and dubby tracks here but the real stunner is the opening track. My Bloody Valentine meets FAX? Dunno but it had me by the chest. V/VA - Enter the Monkey (Mad Monkey Productions) Really diverse comp with a nice balance of familiar names and unknowns. Being a conservative, my tastes predictably gravitated towards the tracks by Lesser, Kid606 & SCSI Bear, and those of similar ilk. Its all good stuff and the IDM list artists have some strong tracks. Temporary favorite (for unknown reasons) is the ham-fisted Disc track. It sounds like an art brut/Sesame Street version of Oval.
