I certainly don't want to turn this into collectors vs. purists or anything silly like that, but... certainly it should be fine that pj should advertise his wares this way, he does it for the same reason that dogs lick themselves. I imagine plenty of mail has gone toward that stack of aphex rarities, and probably with attachments like "I'll give you ten more bucks than your highest offer!" And why not? Some of his items are difficult to come by, and are worth their inflated prices. Most of us will not find sealed J9's or Parasights in obscure record stores, because their wasn't very many to begin with. However, Tusken Raiders and Spacepimps shouldn't be that hard to cough up, and that is the problem I see here. Just because it's out of print is no reason to assess instant profitable value to anything. Please avoid paying high prices for things that really aren't worth the dollar charged. I worry that it will seemingly make everything "rare", as is the case, often. Please, look around, think before you encourage or discourage this kind of pricing and try and not fuck your fellow music lover. As a final thought, the last record setting record price that _I_ knew of was $250+ for a original pink vinyl "Rez" by Underworld in S.F. Hmmmm. A fool and his money. ______________________________________________________________________________ Cameron Bowden cameron@fishtank.com Blacksmith on the anvil in your ear... Strange? does seem to be another place for wallet-emptying prices. A couple of months ago I saw the red and blue Universal Indicators there (marked Aphex Twin) for $75 each. Amnyone want my pink Rez? Just kidding, I'd never sell. Got mine in San Francisco too, for all of $9. :: Alan M. Parry :: fluid@hyperreal.com :: <finger me for PGP key> :: http://hyperreal.com/~fluid

They only hit me for $30 when I bought Ambient Otaku a month ago. But, most of their prices are quite reasonable for a retail store. Paul Rafanello Onnow: Repeats

I just got 2 extra copies of the Red and Blue ep's Universal Indicators in mint condition from a very feeble minded friend. I wont be like modern music and try to rip someone off, but I would like to trade them for some certain vinyl I am after. E mail me for a list of my want's if you are interested in the trade.. I would tend to agree that inflated prices for sought after items are somewhat inevitable although the idm arena has certain dynamics that have staved off the collector/high price mentality fairly well... but it's only a matter of time. Look at the prices industrial rarities go for (I don't mean Wax Trax industrial) but things like NWW's Drunk with the old man of the mountains which often sees asking prices of $150-200. In looking at the market value of rare IDM and rare industrial records I've been suprised at how inexpensive I often see hard to find IDM vinyl selling for. It's rather refreshing but unfortunately it may not last. Give it a few more years and the prices for those Black Dog and Global Communications records will probably regularly be in the range Modern Music is asking. I can understand the reaction though as the collecters market for these things is just now started to develop and many people aren't used to supply and demand dynamics being applied to IDM rarities. In the end, if it's worth it to you buy it, if not then don't. It's painful to see things I really want out of my self-imposed price range though...I can feel the pain, believe me...I'd like some of those records too but I'm not prepared to pay some of those prices either. There were some reasonably prices things on the list which I'm buying though. Tony
