Here is a review of the Sheffield Autechre gig, as printed in the
University Newspaper. Not written by me.
"Autechre are one of the more popular bands that the Hallamshire has
boasted for quite a while. The event was a sell out, unusual for the
Hallamshire, and expectations were high. After we were subjected to
various bizarre noises from the DJ, Autechre began their set.
Autechre are a [italics] hard techno band, in the purest sense of the
word. Their industrial beats shudder in your stomach, and we're
treated to an abundance of rumbling sub-bass and electronic bleeps.
So, I suppose that it might have been a little disappointing for the
Autechre duo to spot so few people moving - I think that I counted
about six. All in all, I must say I wasn't really sad when it was
all over. The music was undoubtedly first rate for way out techno
heads; but for mere mortals like me it was, well a little boring. I
really would have given anything for just a little melody. Only the
penultimate song, boasting a Chemical Brothers type groove, got me
anywhere near excited."
As one of the six, I must say I really quite enjoyed it. Perhaps
list readers may care to compare and contrast with g303's review, if
they still have it.
