Very true, a lot of the trax aphex does seem to be very 'noodly' lately, other techno pioneers such as LFO for example, spend a lot more time tweaking and producing their stuff to perfection, just look at how long it's taken for their next album. Though five years or whatever is a bit long, but Kraftwerk similarly spent about five or six years producing some of their albums and when it came out they were brilliant. So it just goes to show... Probe.

If you are referring to _Electric Cafe_, that is commonly considered a major disappointment even among Kraftwerk fans (myself included). Not a major addition to their formidable, but modestly sized body of work. If Mr. James were to spend more time refining and polishing his best ideas, he may be capable of some truly dangerous work. Do I DARE suggest an editor or outside co-producer, to help reel in the excesses? I hereby apply for that job. --==-- How to make the skewed breakbeats for a junglish track in less time than the actual duration of the track --==-- 1. Boost the tempo on your sequencer to about 300bpm 2. Use a drum machine with a "roll" feature 3. While turning the roll on an off, hit the kicks, snares and hats of your choice like a madman 4. Quantize 5. Set the tempo back down to 140-160 or wherever 6. Hit Play.

Why? I made a very good, infinitely long, track the other day, in 27 seconds. A looped 8 Hz sine wave. Bit minimalist for some, mind. :) g The WARP Web Site 3 0 3 http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n264671/wap-indx.html

Funny joke! eric p.s. Ironically, October is both Head Injury Month and Oral Sex Month.

And it works! (seriously, my friends and I used to create chirpy industrial dance sounds by doing almost the same thing and playing it through a synth. Works good with a minimal drum machine like a TR-505, and an easily programmable synth like an ESQ-1. I'm certain it's the way a lot of bands created the same type of sound :-) ObIDM-in-Minutes-or-less: Jeff Thorne and I created a very plastikman-sounding tune the other night in less than 10 minutes. The sum track total of all the parts (before looping) was maybe 16 measures, and the tune could have gone on forever. I'm also certain we could have convinced the average person that it was a Plastikman tune.

I've tried this with my drum machine and a patch that seemingly changes pitch (I turned up the modulation depth and slowed down the modulation rate). This gave me some great basslines, and all I had to do was change the rhythm patterns!
