Check this out. T Power 'the self evident truth of an intuitive mind' on Sound Of The Underground. I agree this is top notch. Combines some mellow production with manic freeform touches.

The new 4-Hero album, "Parallel Universe", just re-released on Selector (a new jungle subdivision of Crammed records out of Austria) shouldn't be too hard to find, and the breaks contained therein are utterly amazing. The funkiest piece of electronic music I have ever heard. The first track is a vocal mix of Universal Love that may put you off a bit, but it isn't by 4-Hero. The seventy minutes that come after it are much better. Also the Endemic Void has some fantastic stuff. I think they have an EP or two out, but I'm not sure where you can find them. They combine ambience, breaks, and live trumpet playing to impressive effect. Global communication/Reload puts out some excellent mellow jungle under the name of Chameleon. I think that they are due to release an Ep under that name in the near future. There is a remix of Link by Chameleon on the Evolution sampler. Spring Heeled Jack has an LP "There are Strings" out. It is rumored to be very good. If you want something easy to find, there is the surprisingly good compilation Counterforce out domestically on FFRR. Its sequenced by Mark Gage of Vapourspace and has four tracks by DJ Crystal, and some other tracks by Rogue Unit, Hyper on the Experience, Goldie, and even a junglist version of "are we here?" by Orbital. Warpdrive by Dj Crystal is amazing. And best of all it doesn't have the word JUNGLE plastered all over the cover. Last the new mu-ziq LP "In Pine Effect" is supposed to be drum and bass in a mu-ziq format. I haven't heard it, so I can't reccomend it, but it could turn out to be good, who knows?

Get some compilations like "Artcore" on React, or Goldie's album "Timeless" on ffrr/London, or Omni Trio "The Deepest Cut" on Suburban Base. Personally I found a good way of expanding my d&b collection was by getting "The Joint" and "The Joint II" on Moving Shadow/Suburban Base cos there's a good balance between more accessibly "intelligent" stuff and proper ruff rudeboy breaks! Get the Goldie album, Jungle Book compilation (on Revit), T-Power, Number One In The Jungle (another comp). The Attica Blues ep on Mo'Wax has 2 killer jungle remixes, as the Cool Breeze single for one of their tracks ("Can't Deal With This"). Bye, mohsen

Do you have the Finley's Rainbow (AGCG) 4-Hero mixes if not get 'em. Cat no. is Juice Box 26. T-Power has been rightly lauded here recently of course. Otherwise if you like Plug get the 2-Player 'Extreme Possibilities' on Ninja Tune which has Wagon Christ and Boymerang mixes. DJ Crystal, Photek, LTJ Bukem, Alex Reese are worth checking out if you can find them. I wouldn't advise taking Mr RD James efforts too seriously though. Otherwise you may have to go for compilations. Total Science Vol 1 (Black Market) is the best I've heard due to a quite diverse range of tracks. Jon Burrell

Try Pulp Fiction by Alex and the Natural Born Killa EP by the Peshay (I think). Also there is of course all the Goldie stuff, he likes to use "real" instruments!!! All the tunes Foul Play have been putting out there, again, some of them are a bit harder, but this is sort of "old skool" intelligent d&b and they have a new album out... A lot of the new things on the Movin Shadow label are pretty jazzy, mellow drum and bass choons, check them... I'll definitely second this. I've got pretty much the complete Metalheadz back catalogue now, save for numbers 1, 5 and 7, and the overall standard is superb. Oh, and the Natural Born Killaz EP is by Photek (MET008). Other recommended stuff is anything you can find on Precious Materials, and Good Looking/Looking Good (LTJ Bukem's labels). there's been plenty of suggestions on this list, but to add fuel... kings of the jungle (comp) (pimpmusic) - one cd is ragga, one is more instrumental. i happen to like ragga, therefore i like this cd. ltj bukem has some neat stuff coming out on his label which i believe is called horizons (although that could just be the name of a 12".) more experimental and less of the standard amen+patois sample. i go nuts for d'cruze - heaven (label?) with its generally darker, lush feel. a few peeps i know got their start into really liking jungle with drum&bass selection 4 (moonshine). it's a good comp, mixed by dj hype (be prepared for a fair amount of scratching), and above all, it's domestic so it's CHEAP. you usually can't go wrong with anything on metalheadz if you like the sparser stuff or moving shadow in general. try dubshack@aol.com for mixtapes...tapes are good intros to certain styles (ragga, d&b, ambient(which i like to call 'fluffy jungle'), or the latest terms of 'hardstep' and 'darkside.') i really dig the darker stuff coming out lately and if anyone knows of any dark jungle cds coming out lately, pls tell me. 4 hero is good, although i agree with andrew bennett(?) in that after a while the beats do become somewhat monotonous. but oh man, get lit and listen to tracks 4-6, esp. the beats on track 4...ahhh. and lastly, if my intuition is correct and you are at some college in Illinois or Indiana, the chicago scene is/was lately a happenin' one. mike shum (snuggles) has a jungle radio show on there sometime. i apologize for lack of specifics but try the college stations, i believe it is on friday night. and go check out some yummy chewns at a rave with hopefully a great sound system. wear earplugs (you should do so ALWAYS, tis better to spend $50 on a pair of custom fit earplugs or at least a buck on some crap foam ones than to lose your hearing before you are 30) and stand in front of the bass bins for a while. *sigh* 10 days 'til i hear yummy jungle at a party... .joanna. onnow: erm, sonic youth - washing machine. *gasp* please, please let me stay on the list! ;) --- joroses@mail.utexas.edu andover '94 - Mommy, mommy, can I have a cookie? -- Sure, honey, take as many as you want from the jar. -- But, Mommy, I don't have any arms. -- No arms, no cookies.

i have a jungle 12" called "natural born killers" by atomic dog (i think). it's quite good and i can highly recommend it. it's basically an ambient track with jungle breaks and an extremely phat bass line. it's the standard jungle formula but all the elements work very well together. if you don't yet have the new aphex, go to your local shop and get it now. don't let anyone tell you that it's just dick's take on jungle. it's much more than that. admittedly, side two is borderline filler material and exactly what you're thinking RDJ would do to jungle. but the A side will fuck you up. he does some really amazing things with the sounds. it's jungle like you've never heard. btw, am i the only one on this list who doesn't like screaming divas in their jungle? the vocals don't really fit into my idea of what good jungle should be, thus i have a hard time with the likes of goldie and that fella named gerald. out. rex.
