Pardon the ignorance; what, exactly, are lock grooves? Thinking of picking up a limited ed. release in the near future, but want to know whether such things (there are four on this one) should make me look into buying the CD instead. Robert- Lock grooves are vinyl grooves that "lock" the needle in to playing the groove over and over until you pick it up. For example: Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth released an album called: "From Here To Infinity" which has a lock groove at the end of each song. Thus, each song never really ends, conceptually. Another fabulous lock groove record which comes to mind is RRR 100. This record marks indie-noise label RRR's 100th release. It's a 7" containing 100 lock grooves! 50 to a side, by 100 artists. I know these examples aren't very idm-ish, but I'm unaware of any idm records with lock grooves.............. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ''J''O''H''N'''''''R''I''C''K''M''A''N'''''''''''''''''''''''' jknee@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu

Actually, there's lots... it's especially popular among Detroit-affiliated artists -- Jeff Mills is a particular fan of them. Check out his _Cycle 30_ and _Growth_ EP's, for example. There's also a couple of the X-10n records from the UR days. As someone else already brought up, Canada's Legion of Green Men are lock-groove enthusiasts as well, and the aforementioned locked grooves on the Ectomorph record kick all kinds o' butt. And wasn't there one on that first Jedi Knights EP? I know I'm blanking on some other pretty prominent releases, but IDM lock grooves aren't as rare as you might think. As I understand, the reason you don't see more of them is that the mastering house has to be pretty competent to pull it off. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services marmoset@conch.aa.msen.com phat phorest phires Dave Walker

_Growth_ is the best use of a locked groove I think I've ever heard. The track just builds and builds, reaches its peak and then locks beautifully.

Yup; insane laughing if my memory serves me correctly. A definite Teep tool, this one :)

Planetary Assault Systems _Diesel Drudge_ has one. A friend bought it and listened to it for thirty minutes before he realised it was a locked groove. || [CiM] || u9323899@sys.uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

There's also one on the jedi knights remix of 7'39" (I think, my stylus picks up before it makes the complete rotation), which by the way, i was going to include in my vinyl sale (once i have time to go through stuff). So if you want it, make me an offer (also willing to consider any good trades). Global Communication: maiden voyage (DJ green vinyl promo, GLOBA002TDJ) Side A 1. grid mix 2. michael brook mix Side AA 1. 7'39" (jedi knights mix w/ locked groove)

There's such a thing in the ElpH 10" (Eskaton 002 I think). probably done by coil or a by product. Locked groove at the end of the song. A typical infinity stunt. snow

and mike kandel of exist dance records (who is, or was, heavily influenced by detroit artists) has used them several times. one of the versions of "they came in peace" has it, as does one of the sides of "trying to reach you"... there's more but i'm spacing on them. he's also done the (well worn) trick of making the groove skip forward, leaving a lot of space, and etching a message in the empty space... -j-

"trick"? I thought this was just standard for vinyl releases (or are you saying that he did it in the outside & not inside groove?)

Let's get down to the cool stuff: making locked grooves that sync with the rhythm of the track as it entered the locked groove. If you made a 133.332 BPM tune, you could make several versions on the vinyl that built up and ended with locked grooves that would be mixable! 33.3333 Rotations per Minute x 4 beats = 133.333 beats per minute. It would be the same no matter how in/out from the center the needle was (this distance only effects fidelity{amount of time etched over length of groove}) So who's done this? David Chandler - chandler@nethost.multnomah.lib.or.us (503)301-3011 grep -i casio goodwillbins >> mystudio ; grep -i atari goodwillbins >> mystudio ;

speaking of lock grooves, you should all check out the RRR 500 record there are some amazing loops in there, wondering why djs dont put them to good use has anyone got any of the other RRR lock groove releases, like RRR200? and wondering what kind of cash a person would need to get a half decent scratching/dj set up, since i have absolutely no idea how the ninja masters do what they do the Zen Cuts, as i listen to it more and more, is nothing short of fucking amazing, something for everyone brian _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. well you can get a pair of turntables for about $400, a mixer for about $200, and a pair of good scratching cartridges/needles for about $150. slipmats are cheap (but necessary). but as far as the ninja masters do it - it's called practice and ingenuity :) cheers, /derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i got a 7" from rre with i think 100 locked grooves on it... Also recommendable om rre is the triple album Ptolaimine from Asmus tietchens which is based upon these 7"s locked grooves. More recommendable locked grooves are the Noto double 10" which is not only beautifull to look at, but highly recommendable for dj's without an attitude. And what about the Janek Schaefer 7" on Hot air???
