Where is it? Public radio broadcasts on the 'net, why isn't their some innovative DJ, with a soundcard and a good 'net connection broadcasting? And if public radio can do it, anyone can.... There already is. The Internet Multicasting Service already broadcasts some programs over the Multicast Backbone (MBONE), and sometimes music is played. Also, one of the MBONE sessions is called "Radio Free VAT" ("VAT" stands for Van's Audio Tool, the primary audio component of the Internet Multicasting apps). If you want to broadcast audio - to be received in glorious, full- spectrum 8 KHz mono (NOT) - simply sign up to take a slot on Radio Free VAT and broadcast away. I did just this over a year ago - I recall playing Moonwater's "In Existence" and Locust's "Weathered Well", among other things. The Aussies who were tuned in at the time (it was late PM Pacific time) seemed to appreciate it ... (See http://www.eit.com/techinfo/mbone/mbone.html for more info, if you like.) Someday when we have fiber (fibre for you Limey lot) everywhere, we'll have virtual DJs all over the damned place. And a glorious day it will be, since we'll be able to hear (and obtain) 16-bit, 48 KHz full stereo audio music over the 'Net, and then I won't have to be bugged that I can't hear those CDs and 12" ers beforehand that I keep buying down at Aron's Records ... :-) - Greg
