1. the other night i was listening to an old cd of mine, the first Gang Starr album _No More Mr. Nice Guy_ and i heard one of the most sublime tracks, which i had forgotten about for a while. has anyone on this list ever heard "DJ Premie r in Deep Concentration"? that is an amazing track... far better than any thing i've heard in the new "trip-hop" bloom. does anyone know of similar tracks, engaging instrumental hip-hop produced before such stuff became trendy? i think perhaps MC900ft. Jesus "Shut Up" qualifies also, though that's in a different vein. 1a. obidm: autechre ripped off "Deep concentration". well, they used the same piano loop. Gang Starr's is far better, IMO. 2. Do Children of the Bong indeed have a new full-length out? Anyone heard it , have reviews/opinions? Are they funk-influenced at all, or am i thinking of a completely different group? -Nick

Guru's solo records (volumes one and two) are further explorations into melding jazz and hip hop. BTW, Guru is the rapper behind Gangstar. I think other albums that really foreshadow a lot of what's hot right now would include Eric B and Rakim's _Follow the Leader_ (incredible groove on the title track, IMHO) as well as the first Digable Planets release. If you're referring to the loop in - d'oh, can't remember the name - the track from 'Incunabula' that was put on the 'Headz' compilation, that's apparently a Miles Davis sample, so they both "ripped off" that. How can you listen to this kind of music and complain about "rip offs", anyway? nick, which autechre track? curious, Teep on now: gang starr - just to get a rep (instrumental) which btw, has a sample that's used in "spotlight" (aphex twin mix) but i'm sure neither kids can claim ownership which is most likely the case with the above. i digress.

Thanks for reminding me that I <must> pick up a new copy of the Gang Starr album - since mine is lost >( Terminator X's album 'The valley of the jeep beets' has a few 'instrumental' tracks. Unfortunately, they are short. Check out Eric B & Rakim's first - 'Paid in Full' - 2 nice instrumental cuts - Eric B is on the cut & Chinese arithmetic. _`~=~=~`boom~~`boom~=~= _-I-__\ /__ ` ~ / \_ -I-
