Pretty much everyone knows about the hidden track on ep7, but I haven't heard any talk about the hidden track on lp5... maybe I missed it since I'm rather new to this list. Anyhow, I found that an extra track just magically appeared on my lp5, and I'm assuming it's something like 50 plays. I also know that they could do something like that because major labels were talking about limiting CDs to 1000 plays and then they stop working. anyone lost?? good. let me know if anone else has heard of this. foambee@splink.com http://www.splink.com/punkrag/bzrec/ (my record label) http://www.splink.com/punkrag/crtrader/ (cdr/mp3 trading)

heh.. interesting idea... but no. the hidden track is on there always, not after a certain number of plays or something. chris __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I assume limiting plays on a piece of read-only optical media would be impossible since there would be no way to write that value on the disc. The only thing I can think of would be a special cd player that counted how many times you put in a specific disc and when you pressed play, then stored that value in memory. It could then disable the play button for that specific disc. So with that in mind it wouldn't be the disc that was limited but the cd player...I don't think major labels have that much pull over the hundreds of cd player manufacturers that exsist. It's a novel idea though and I wouldn't put it past a bunch of red-faced white men in suits. BTW--Isn't Autecre released under Warp in the UK and Nothing in the US? If so do these labels count as major labels? -Lee

First of all, the US Autechre LP5 CD always had 12 tracks. There is some silence at the end of track 11, so you might have thought the disc was over at that point. But track 12 was always there. (I believe the UK version has the last song as part of track 11, though, but the effect is the same.) However, here's a scary thought: Lee Azzarello wrote:

Actually, there is a company out there trying to do this very thing with DVDs, but in a very different way. There was an article on Wired News last week which described a company trying to come up with a film that you could coat a DVD with. This particular film would be "activated" by the reading of the DVD by a laser, and over some period of time, would eventually turn blue. At that point, the DVD would become unreadable, I guess because the laser can't reflect properly through blue. The article is at: http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,33781,00.html If they are able to actually make this work, it could be done for music CDs as well. Honestly, I don't know why anyone believes there's a big market for this. But clearly, some people do. -- Adam J Weitzman, NewsEdge Corp.
