32 Kbps is the lower limit for any digital audio broadcast of music
if you want to be able to differentiate between Public Enemy and
Orbital. I am barely joking, actually. Under 32 Kbps, with the current
technology the quality degrades extremely rapidly and ends up sounding
worse than the cheapest shortwave radio you can find.
So, that would seriously limit the number of listeners... So they did
as if they hadn't heard the result, and went for realtime audio on
10KBps. MBone is one solution, realaudio is another. Both are not
suited for music at this kind of bitrate.

I heard that it would be RealAudio, not Mbone (no video). Since this
craze for audio on demand, i get email on a regular basis on why
we dont use this on hyperreal... Musicians are already cringing at
MPEG which is several magnitudes better than RA, so forget it.
I did a comparison of the various sound compressions on hyperreal,
in the music/misc/sounds/compare directory, to ease my mailbox :)
