hello again folks .. been off at Glasters for the week what a laugh .... 200,000 plus baking in the sun all day and chillin all night under the stars to the most diverse sounds ever heard at a festival! my highlights of the week ... folloing the Rinky dink bicycle sound system round the Green field seeing Carl Cox's T-Shirt (Big Black Cox) logging on from a solar powered Unix setup in the Cybercafe for BBC Net prog reading a message from Michael Eavis - instant ovation! playing Harry Hosono dub trax in the Megadog watching 1,000 people rush the fence .... Bliss Body metal orchestra & their 8 foot hologram disc Eat Static jungle tracks live Kevin Fish dropping 'Angry Dolphin' playing Steve Reich 4 Sections in the Big Chill,Green Field 6 am Sunday Kenny Larkin turning up just in time to play last ... Megadog stiltwalkers especially the Bee with outsized genitalia introducing The Prodigy to 100,000 screaming lunatics .... lowpoints : 15 power failures on main stage too many boring indie bands all day CS gas in the dance tent 1st degree sunburn mixer blew up in Megadog tent losing half the things you were given!! having to leave(!) too many people!! anyway back to the topic on hand ... The idm/jungle interface continues to grow with three HUMUNGOUS records that are essential purchases got anyone into the cutting edge ... all three involve the awesome LUKE VIBERT ... 1) TWO PLAYER-Extreme Possibilities (Ninja Tune) a kind of supergroup here - Daniel Pemberton (Fax), John Tye (MLO), Boymerang (Bark Psychosis offshoot), Paul Thomas (Kiss FM) and the Vibert man 12" has four mixes including two outstanding junglist excursions 2) PLUG 1 and Plug 2 (Rising High) Two long eps full of the most fucked up drum and bass lunacy you have ever heard like Frank Zappa and Goldie playing laser quest inside a Cray mainframe warning - this will damage your brain 3) New Wagon Christ single on Rising High has a jungle mix by our old friend Richard D James, and it is A KILLER. Its one of the tracks from Throbbing Pouch track C2 i think? - sound like morricone over phat beats - now it sounds like Morton Subotnick and Mark Stewart on heavy tryptamines ..... indescribable I'd love to hear whether DJs are playing this stuff!! it sure is extreme ..... also very interesting ... 4 HERO & GERALD white label cool jazzy techno suprise! also GERALD vs FLORA PURIM yes the amazing Brazilian jazz singer returns with a cool mix from Gerald also strangeness from Attica Blues interesting stuff ... GOLDIE LP is pretty good but he didn't really pull it off at Glastonbury ... jungle ideas are permeating all levels of techno in the uk at last ... look out for anonymous avant-junglisms from most of the UKs top techno acts in months to come!! Chameleon and DNote, Plaid and Vibert, Boymerang and Laswell, all the left wing of techno are getting into jungle in a big way.. In fact you could set up a book on who's next to suprise the world with a jungle excursion .. 2/1 Juan Atkins - already working with Dego for R&S, this is going to be a biggie 3/1 Underworld - there are several Jungle plates around but they're by someone else ... 3/1 The Orb - already had Gerald in to mix 3/1 Weatherall - likes his bass, and being told not to play it will annoy him 4/1 My Bloody Valentine - strange but true, an album is in the can 4/1 Spacetime Continuum - has an incredible jazz-jungle track in his live set, lets have it out! 4/1 Adrian Sherwood - Still a huge influence but quiet of late 6/1 Chemical Brothers - anything for a laugh 6/1 Mad Professor - i didn;t like the jungle CD but new stuff is better, keep listening 10/1 Kraftwerk - not very likely but it would be interesting to say the least!! 20/1 Pete Namlook - would need a new color code system! 100/1 Guns & ROses - anythings possible. Ugh, what a horrible idea. gotta go now to spin in HACKNEY home of much of this stuff in the first place wonder what they'll make of it all?? seeya all at LOVE PARADE ... morris -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- GLOBAL CHILLAGE the new LP from IRRESISTIBLE FORCE out (USA) 31/5/95 --- --- WAVEFORM / NATURAL FREQUENCY remixes 12" out now on Astralwerks --- --- AURAL EXPANSION 12" - remixes by MMM out now on Crammed Discs --- --- --- --- check out A SITE FOR SORE EARS ..... the MMM WWW server --- --- --- --- http://www.southern.com/MMM/homepage.html (in the uk) --- --- http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/trellos/homepage.html (in the US) --- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

pardon me if i am out of line, but what the fuck? now that everyone and his intelligent dog is jumping on the jungle tip, everyone swarms to it. i remember mixmaster morris plain out insulting hardcore as stupid and idiotic in more than one article and interview. now he's praising every single artist who's switching styles. can i call mixmaster morris's stuff stupid ambient? well, i am. frankly, it's way over sampled, and i don't like a lot of the vocal samples. some of them would be better in a gabber album. it's silly and boorish. it's funny how trends work. it's funny how people switch sides. -- o _/,_ . /o...\__// fk453@cleveland.freenet.edu \_'__/``\` \`

It's also funny how some people are consistently annoying. In moving the IDM divining rod a bit further off course, I picked up _No Sound is too Taboo_ by our friends from the Far East, the United Future Organization. Very jazzy, very mellow, but a few tracks have the beat. Good groove music, to be sure. Also heavily recommended already, and I'll nth that recommendation, is the domestic _Transmissions from the Planet Dog_. If I'd known Banco de Gaia was *this* beautiful, I would have shelled out the import dollars long ago. And now it's going to be domestic! Happy, Joy. My vote for best comp. of the year might end up being earthrise.ntone.1, instinct's 2XCD collection of tracks on ntone. nice combo of jazz, trip, ambient & a few upbeat rhythms. can't beat it for 11.99 Of course, if it were a UK release, people would be discussing this one much more than they have.

Eesh. Anyone who thinks of music tastes as "sides" needs to reevaluate their stance IMO. This isn't an "us versus them" issue. Personal music tastes is very complicated. Maybe at the time when Morris made the comment about "hardcore" he found no music in that genre very inspiratoinal. Now maybe there are tracks out there which have taken him by suprise which is good because that means the scene and sound is progressing. To me that is what makes techno and related electronic music so much fun. Just when you've found something that makes you jump out of your skin with excitement, it changes and transforms into an even more interesting style. Progression is key. Lack thereof is what makes most of those who love elecronic music dislike most other forms of music (i.e. rock, country..) I tend to agree with Morris. Only because of my personal tastes and not because of Morris' popularity. I disliked the whole breakbeat style that emerged a couple of years ago. It didn't catch me as being clever or creative. When jungle started to appear I more or less ignored it because it was born out of the breakbeat scene. Big mistake. Last weekend San Francisco's best jungle DJ (and probably only jungle DJ) played me some of his mix tapes. On them were some of the tracks Morris mentioned (Plug1 and the other Vibert jungle track he mentioned). We ended up going out to the car because the party we were at was mostly typical formula house music and I can't tell you how bored I am of the same old house beat and piano progressions (with vocals thrown in of course). I was amazed by the tricky beats and reggae roots style rhythims and bass lines in the jungle I heard. It was fun. It was exciting. It was fresh, and most of all it was inventive and incredibly creative. I liked it so much that I decided to sit down with Thad (the jungle DJ friend) and work out some jungle tracks. Call me trandy. Call me a bandwagon jumper. I don't really care, but call me inspired! There's some incredible shit out there if you know where to look. Morris was just expressing his excitement in the stuff that he's found and decided to share it with the rest of us. No harm done IMO. I also think it pertains to the list since some "IDM" artists were of those mentioned in the post. I guess my point is don't window shop. Get in there and try on all the different sizes and shapes before you decide something is crap. There are really so many sub genres of jungle (drum 'n bass, ambient jungle, experimantal...). You're bound to find something out there that you like, esp. with so many excellent musicians contributing to the style. -robert --> __ _ _ _____ _____ _____ / _\ | || || _ \|_ _|/ _ \ / /_\\ | -- || |_) | _| |_ | (_) | ______________ /______\\____/|_____/|_____|\_____/ ( *electronic* ) "Thanks for the technical data. I wouldn't neccesarily call Jungle ...hardcore...there is SOME hardcore styles..but a lot of it is ambient jungle or jazzy jungle..etc..oh and soon enough My Bloody Valentine jungle....(Yikes????).

All I have heard is the Irresistable Force record...and that, I would have to say, is stupid ambient..it's a matter of opinion.

Switch sides? I don't understand this statement......Jungle is very refreshing if you ask me. I can't wait to hear more.... -Darren Hi Nancy & Robert : ) ****Oh I almost forgot I LOVE Kenny Larkin's new one.."Metaphor"....makes me want my 909 back. Oh there is also the diy 12in by TO-KA Dub-4-you...I like this a lot too... Disco that makes me want to get up and groove.
