---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 27 Jun 1995 19:38:24 +0100 From: PAUL JARVIS <paul.jarvis@bbsrc.ac.uk> Subject: REVIEW - Jake Slazenger Jake Slazenger - "Makesaracket" (Clear - CLR410CD) -------------------------------------------------- == TRACK LISTING == Megaphonk / Set Up R / Stupid Wanker / Gary's Birthday / Daytime Kiss / Erp or Brp / Watt / Flod / Bolus / Feet / Five Alive / Lux == REVIEW == Electro and u-ziq fans of the world unite! Album of the year alert. Rush out and buy this now - this is an essential purchase. Never been terribly taken with u-ziq before, but this is different and, hey, it's Jake Slazenger not u-ziq. The best way to describe this is that its somewhere between u-ziq as u-ziq normally is and the Jedi Knights as they usually are. Many of Paradinas's trademark distorted sounds are here (I guess he just can't help himself), but they've been gorgeously combined with funky basslines, cheesey keyboards and tacky melodies which sound like they've been dragged right out of the 70s and 80s. The combined effect of these two ingredients is to produce a truly delicious and thoroughly modern sound which is worth infinitely more than the sum of its parts. Favourites for me are opener "Megaphonk" which has an electric organ (remember the Inspiral Carpets?) riff running from start to finish and builds into a rare old groove, and the mellower funky number called "Daytime Kiss." Train spot - Happy Mondays "Rave On" bassline used in track 8 - "Flod." And for those of you who like artwork, there's plenty to keep you happy here. The front inlay card is missing but the "clear" plastic case has been printed with Jake's signature, and inside there's all sorts of nice pale green and cream coloured pictures and things. It all looks very swish indeed. So to sum up..... BUY IT! Album of the year? Maybe - I can't remember what the competition is. == QUESTION == Can anyone tell me if this is the first Clear CD release, and if not what are the others, what do they sound like and are they any good? Also if you happen to know of any other albums that sound like this, please let me know. Cheers! ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ' ' // _____ _____ _____________________ // ' ' // ||||\\ //|||| ___ ||||||||||||||||||||| /// -__ - _ _ -_ // |||| \\ // |||| ||// \\ ///// /// _-__ _ - _ // |||| |||| |||. ____ ///// /// _--- _ - _- // \\\\\ ///// // ` \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\ ///// // ` ` ////////////// \\ // \\ \\\\\// // /// //// ///// \\ // \\ // /// //// ///// // \\////////////////// /// //// //////////////// // //// ///// jarvisr@bbsrc.ac.uk / //// ///// ///// ///// John Innes Centre, Norwich Research Park, ////////// Colney, Norwich NR4 7UH, England, United Kingdom.

I was going to buy the CD but the vinyl has 2 additional tracks and was priced $5 less! (2 LP's) The pressing quality is excellent as well, (unlike many vinyl pressings these days.) Tony

True, true...it seems to me that Clear pressings have been some of the best I've bought recently. Super-clean and almost no noise. Anyone else notice this? - Matthew "I grew up thinking that techno music is actually something that you can't imagine. That is techno at its best. If you hear something that you'd never expect to hear - that's techno. If you hear something that kind of sounds like you've heard it before, then it's not techno." - Jeff Mills
