Yes it's off topic but better than lab rats or whatever that was all about. ;) heh hehh, the art for Basic Channel's CD compilation is my fave so far, (Good luck figuring out the track titles, though, or even WHO IT IS for that matter), with Planet E's "Experiments" Petri-Dish thing taking a close second. Honorable Mention goes to Black Dog "Bytes" for low-key computer art coolness. There was a cool article in U&LC (Upper and Lower Case, a typographers magazine) about how "The Designers Republic" has made a cool artistic/graphic splash in the techno (and even pop) music community. THey have done art from everyone from Bjork to PWEI to Kenny Larkin, with tons good stuff in-between. And if anyone from the Designer's Republic is reading this, they should HIRE ME! Favorite artwork on a recent release would have to go to the Orb. The packaging on the new vinyl is very nice with the clear plastic sleeve and beautifully printed innersleeves on nice heavy no gloss paper. Hell the packaging might be better than the music. The jury needs a few more listens. -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu "God, please save me from your followers" -bumpersticker

Shit, I totally forgot about these. I have fallen in love with the artwork for the Sandoz albums _Digital Lifeforms_ and _Intensely Radioactive_ which are also superb records in their own right. Can someone tell me about the Sandoz release I am missing? And while I'm playing up pictures of dead animals outside the world of v23, the cover for The Theory of Evolution is pretty damned nice, too. Also, though Clan of Xymox are definitely VERY *i*dm they may be pushing the envelope of this list...still, their wonderful album _Medusa_ boasts my favorite album cover of all time--simple but stunning and beautiful. Take a quick peek at it if you ever have the chance. einexile, 4ad-l's self-appointed ambassador to idm

I do not think Xymox has anything to do with idm at all..... Do we need a tapeworm to fish?

Based on what albums? I would admit earlier Xymox like "Clan of Xymox" and "Medusa" may not be idm but more recent releases such as "Headclouds" and "Metamorphosis" could arguably be classed idm. Steve

My main intention in mentioning the above in the way I did was simply to point out some really nice artwork for a different sort of music. I was basically nitpicking. Clan of Xymox (as opposed to Xymox) *were* dance music, with far less ambient content than most artists discussed here, and their record were VERY intelligent. The later albums could more arguably be classed as idiotic dance mulch. It is so full of convention and attitude, I personally consider it *far* below the standard of almost anything discussed on this list. It is basically nothing but horrid throwaway pop/new-wave. Early Clan of Xymox, however, though full of singing and very lush atmospherics and percussion, is highly danceable and brilliant. Not all *that* thislisty, but equal to let's say Opus III, Cabaret Voltaire, Bel Canto, the infamous _5ep_, etc. All of whom also boast some pretty nice album art. *raspberries* einexile
