Noticed a brief thread on ELM copycattery - Autechre / RDJ imitators... I haven't heard a lot of these 'imitators', but aren't Ae and RDJ extremely broad artists to copy? I take the point about certain albums being extremely, even suspiciously influential, but these artists are only copying because they love that kind of music. 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.' Perhaps the classics are being imitated because they define their own genre, which people get into and produce for. Rob Playford (or Kool Herc, depending on your viewpoint) started the breakbeat thing - has everyone been 'copying' them? I mean, I'm influenced by all sorts of stuff (Ae, Third Eye Foundation, Plone, prog-rockers Yes, Radiohead, Leftfield, Plone, BOC, a skipping CD, resonant tones in the school toilets, etc.) but I don't think about what I'm making. I just make and put together sounds I like, and it turns out sounding sort of Plaid-like. I wrote my most Plaid-like material before I even heard them. Might this be the kind of thing which Mr. Raczynski and co. are doing? That's not to say that the results are always memorable, but we can't make classics (or our own genres) all the time... Just some thoughts. I don't mean this personally, but I've always thought that statement is a pile of shite. People who lack unique ideas use that statement as some sort of justification for their lack of creativity all the time. It's usually accompanied by a snicker and a look of embarrassment. My other favorite quote that people use is that old Stravinsky one: "Great artist don't borrow, they steal !" I'm sure he was being sarcastic (which he often was), but people have taken it pretty seriously over the years. I think musical thievery is great (hip-hop, plunderphonics,etc.), it doesn't make any difference in the end, but it's really aggravating when people try to cover it up and don't even do a good job at it.
