Ok, finally digging into the _Headz_ comp. I've got a couple of questions: 1. This isn't really supposed to be a jungle comp., is it? 2. What's a good followup comp or album in this style? 3. What else is available by Patterson, R.P.M., or Skull? 4. Should I be asking these questions somwhere else?

Not really, I don't think there's any jungle tracks on there unless you play it at 78 or something. I wouldn't doubt jungle comps coming out on Mo' Wax though. Mo' Wax has been divided into three labels now, with the main label being primarily for compilations. This is all due to their (can I say fatal?) link-up with Virgin, and supposedly Astralwerks in the US.
quoted 1 line 2. What's a good followup comp or album in this style?> 2. What's a good followup comp or album in this style?
Umm, you might want to try the UNKLE double 12" on Mo' Wax, also there's some "trip hop" compilation called "Dope on Plastic", which is okay. *Don't* buy "The Trip Hop Test" and *Don't* buy anything on that stupid Shadow Records. You also may like Mo' Wax's prior comp, which is more jazzy, called "Royalties Overdue".
quoted 1 line 3. What else is available by Patterson, R.P.M., or Skull?> 3. What else is available by Patterson, R.P.M., or Skull?
I'm not sure who Patterson is, I guess he's one of the new recruits on the comp. RPM can be found on two prior Mo' Wax singles, the first one was called "Food of My De-Rhythm"/"Take Me Out of the Ordinary" and the second one has just been re-released called "2000", which you probably have already. It's got two cuts featuring Menelik on the flip side though.

You would probably get a better response on the acid-jazz list. Begin shameless self promotion--------------------------------------------- to subscr!be to the acid-jazz list, send mail to: listserv@ucsd.edu with the message body being: add (your address here) acid-jazz Jonathan

Hold up a sec here. Do you really think the major-label deal can be clasified as fatal? In a recent mini-profile in Urb magazine, Lavelle maintained that the only reason he hooked up with a major-label was so he could be able to sign the artists he wants. I mean, the guy lost both Tricky and and Portishead to other labels, and he seemed a bit miffed about that (and rightfully so, IMHO). Can you really blame him? - Matthew P.S. Jonathan, could you go into a bit more detail about the three different labels that Mo' Wax has split into? I hadn't heard about this...

I *really* like Headz and Dope on Plastic is pretty good too. I once asked for comments on Royalties Overdue and good two opinions: one said it was much better than Headz, the other that Headz was better. I decided not to pick up on it. I did buy Strictly Turntablized on Mo Wax, its just ok, not as good as Headz, but it does go nicely when you want a hip-hop instrumental going in the background when friends drop by. Someone recommended some compilations by Dorado, but by the time I got to the record shop they were gone. Might want to take a shot at 9 Deadly Venoms - its pretty damn good too, the music is in this funky vein with dialog culled from various movies like Eastwood's High Plains Drifter. Always sells out at my record shop whenever it comes in. "toke `em up, toke `em up" - Dope on Plastic

Just to provide an alternate opinion..._Nine Deadly Venoms_ is going to take me a while to get used to. It's not as subtle as a lot of other stuff out there and some of it could even be seen as a bit cheesy. Don't get me wrong, songs like 'Shaolin Buddah Finger' and 'Goal' are classics, but I would say listen before you buy... - Matthew

Nine Deadly Venoms didn't really do it for me....it sounded kind of bland and not very well produced....However an oldy by Depth Charge-Silverfox, will always rank way high in my best tracks of all time category, that fucker is well produced with some serious bowel-rupturing bass....and that rap is bad ass.... townsend is a great club, you have to admit it. lots of room, excellent lights, boomin' sound system. i missed velocette - oh well. got there when Single Cell Orchestra was shaking the rafters. totally different set from Miguel, completely dance oriented. unbelievably good. he's so good, it's scary. tweaker shit and the drum beats come correct. an excellent way to start the evening. Space Time Continuum was up next... pretty mediocre set, all over the place stylistically. from ambient washes to black-doggy-beats. not without its charms. and then of course... PLAID (aka The Anti Dog). well, honestly, i thought it was pretty weak. some good electro stylee moments interspersed with a lot of pointless wanking about. what was up with that circus-music-from-hell track? and the jungle stuff was stunningly average. again, not without its charms, but nothing to write home about. dj mark broom followed starting off with a stellar mix of electro flavored beats (including Tour De France) mixed with harder trance and even some house moments. he kept it varied and interesting, impressing me mightily, for about 45 minutes... and then... it just turned into straight 150 bpm hard trance for what seemed like an eternity. he went from sounding like he was working it hard to working in his sleep. blah! claire (from clear) introduced herself with (rather predictably, i thought) the theme from Star Wars - and not even the cheesy discoid version, but the straight up orchestral soundtrack. after the sniggering had died down this faded into May The Funk Be With You and then we're off on an electro ride for a while. unfortunately, claire just wasn't mixing very well. she'd tease us with a cool phrase reasonably well mixed and then fuck it up and have to do a lame segue. her obligatory kraftwerk nod was numbers/computerworld. ein zwei drei... lest this sound like a lot of complaining, i have to say that i was pretty happy overall. this sort of committment to techno is rare in the SF scene at the moment and i for one was glad for the reminder that yes, there is life beyond house in the club scene. the crowd was definitely into it as well - a fairly good sized turnout for townsend. never too dense for good butt shakin'. but... oh my goodness... keep your eyes on Miguel Fierro (Single Cell Orchestra). scarily good. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://cyborganic.com/~jsd

Yeah, it was cool. I just wish that I KNEW it was a club. I brought my girlfriend to see the show with me, but she's 19, so she had to stay in the motel room.

I agree completely!! His set was the best BY FAR. Absolutely mental techno throughout. Look for this guy's stuff.

Yeah, I was hoping to hear Floatilla and the like, but it was mostly beat driven and uninspiring.

Once again, I agree. I was quite disappointed, mostly because their set was four-on-the-floor plodding beats that is the opposite of what I've come to know and love them for. The last song of their set was kinda bouncy, though.

Yes, his set annoyed me to the point that I decided to leave. But not before speaking briefly with black doggie Andy Turner. I asked him about the Black Dog/Plaid name controversy, and he basically confirmed what has been said by Ken Downie and everybody else: they chose to use Black Dog cuz the name would draw more to the club than Plaid would.
