Yes, but what about newer releases? I have "Major Malfunction" and "Stranger Than Fiction" and would like more. I have seen an UK import copy of a newer record whose cover juxtaposes organs and machinery, what is this? Is it good? Also are there other newer or older releases? Leblanc discography anyone ?? ( that would probably be tough )

I'd recommend tracking down "Tackhead Tape Time" by Tackhead, this is classic LeBlanc with Doug Wimbish on bass, Skip McDonald on guitar and Adrian Sherwood producing. My copy is on Volition, an Australian label (home of Severed Heads), but I think it was also released on Nettwerk. It features the early Tackhead and Gary Clail singles and uses many of the sounds/samples featured on the first two LeBlanc albums. I also love the Mark Stewart album (Mute records STUMM43) again featuring LeBlanc/Wimbish/McDonald/Sherwood with Mark Stewart who was once in the Pop Group. This is almost a covers album featuring extremely mutated versions of Donna Summers' "I Feel Love" ("Fatal Attraction"), Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Forbidden Colors" and Eric Saties "3 Gymopeides"("Stranger"). I lost touch with the work of these guys around 1990 as I wasn't very impressed with their output at the time. I think Keith LeBlanc started recording as DJ Spike and possibly had his own record label - can anyone confirm this? SMO

I'm not sure whether it's a typo or not but my album (read: vinyl) also read "Major Malfuction" although according to The Trouser Press Record Guide, it's supposed to be Malfunction. Possibly an oversight...or who knows? Personally I preferred his "Stranger than Fiction" (1989 - Nettwerk) with the cool "Comedy of Errors" using Lenny Bruce samples. Reynold

This album is TIME TRAVELLER and I really like it. The first half or third is total Major Malfunction stuff - just hard beats with a few vocal samples here and there. The second half gets into the more jazzy stuff approached on Stranger Than Fiction. I'm very happy with this release. Anyway, Blanc Records (Keith's label) released 3 albums that were basically LeBlanc in disguise... "Tasteless Cuts Featuring DJ Spike" - very minimal, raw, not particularly good either. "Raw" - more of the same. "Invisible Spike" - this one is quite good actually - not as brilliant as Stranger Than Fiction (still my all time fave) but it has its moments, mainly due to some wonderful Andy Fairly vocals. Speaking of Andy Fairly (he does the gravelly voiced commentary on StF tracks like Taxcider), he's got a solo album on On-U that has some fine moments, and unfortunately some rather less fine ones as well. I've seen cheap cutout copies around so it might be worth grabbing for that price. Other excellent Tackhead-y moments can be found on Gary Clail's albums. "End Of The Century Party" has some great stuff. And of course, if you haven't yet picked up Gary Clail & The Tackhead Sound System's "It's Tackhead Tape Time" then you are doing yourself a grave injustice. Finally, before there was Tackhead, there was FATS COMET... basically the same thing as Tackhead, only without the vocals. A lot of fun. Unfortunately, all the Fats Comet stuff is only available on 12" - no CDs. But they shouldn't be that hard to find. Start looking. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://cyborganic.com/~jsd

Three questions: 1) Is Tackhead Tape Time the same thing as the Nettwerk album Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System? I have the latter but have never been able to find the former. 2) I picked up Got To Move Pt.2 on the cheap in San Diego last summer. What is it? The packaging only lists the tracks (all "<song> Pt.2") and the lineup (McDonald/Wimbush/LeBlanc/Sherman/Harrow). 3) Same question Re: The Static Seekers' "Body Automatic" single (looks like a McDonald/Wimbush project, on Axis). it's the same thing. i think it was only listed as "tackhead tape time" on the vinyl or in a catalog or somesuch nonsense, but it's the same thing no matter what format you get it in. (starts with "mind at the end of the tether" and ends with "what's my mission now")

Track listing for "Got to Move Pt.2" Got to Move Pt.2 Girl That You Love Pt.2 Melting Pot Pt.2 Crazy World Pt.2 Guardian Angel Pt.2 Can't Let Go Pt.2 Slummy Ghetto Pt.2 Morning Star Pt.2 War Pt.2 Body Talk Pt.2 It probably won't appeal to the Tackhead fans. It's more of a funk album, showing the world they used to be the house band for Sugarhill Records.

Yes, I have all that early stuff from these guys, but didn't remember to mention it. The first early tackhead stuff is classic. My question was really about whether there is any quality newer stuff coming from LeBlanc as a solo artist, although the entire thread is interesting. There is also the Gary Clail stuff which falls into the category too. Unfortunately, like both Tackhead and Mark Stewart, the newer it is, the more it sucks. I was disappointed by Stewarts Metatron, Clail's Dreamstealers and any of the late Tackhead. However, many of these lads did get together and record an excellent record : "Strange Parcels -Disconnection" US cat# On-U sound/Restless 7 72778-2 Drums - Keith LeBlanc, Bass & Ambience - Doug Wimbush, Guitar & Keyboards - Ship McDonald" Pretty much the way to tell if any of this stuff is good is to see if it either has Adrain Sherwood producing it, or at least is on the On-U record label ( always a symbol of quality in my book ). Sherwood's Dub Syndicate is the best Dub in the World.

Yes, I was slacking off here too, because I have "tasteless cuts - featuring DJ Spike" which is indeed LeBlanc and friends making similar pseudo-electro data-funk released as BLC1 CD ( efa 26-17711 ) on blanc records. This is OK, but not that great and often pop up in the used bins ( I bought Tasteless Cuts for $5 US ). Someone mentioned a forthcoming 1995 LeBlanc solo release, anyone else have more info?

i like the last one (invisible spike) quite a bit but the first two are really weak... i'm sorry, but there just isn't that much MUSIC in them and the minimal stuff that is there doesn't hold the ear the way hard & minimal stuff like MAJOR MALFUNCTION does. i mean, MM doesn't exactly have a lot of music either but the rhythms, sparse as they are, really kick large quantities of keister. hey, keith said he only did them in two or three days each so what do you expect... anyway, he's more than made up for it. :) -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://cyborganic.com/~jsd

I don't know why everyone is putting down the DJ Spike releases. Sure by todays standards they seem lacking but at the time I thought they were quite revolutionary. Plus as far as drum programs go I still think some of those songs are quite catchy and work quite well in a trip hop type set. Although I will admit I don't really need to sit down and listen to those albums from start to finish. -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu O O O O O O O O O H | H | H | H | H | H | H | H | H | HN C= N C= N C= N C=HN C=HN C=HN C=HN C=HN C=O \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / C C C C C C C C C / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ / \ H R H R H R H R H R H R H R H R H R
