Absolutely awesome, top three releases of 1999 (couldn't believe it didn't make most people's lists). Jorg Burger is just about uncontested in Cologne, and has really good quality control (well, at least in the past three years). Also, I just saw a brand new Profan release by W. Voigt. Anyone heard it? I never heard much after his last Studio 1 12" (with the pic. sleeve) either... How different can a Mike Ink 12" on Profan be? Expect about three sounds combined into one hook repeated for five minutes, and expect this to be done four times. Finally, why is it so freaking hard to find Kompakt 12"s in San Francisco? This just doesn't make sense. phil >> Considering they're all over the Internet mail order places, they shouldn't be hard to acquire somewhere. http://www.fe.org/labels/kompakt.germany.html is a good place to start. Highlights: Dettinger: Intershop CD Should win the IDM poll best of 1999. If not, it's just because 75% of the voters haven't bought it. Kompakt - Total 1 CD More than enough Kompakt for most humans. Even more so than other genres of electronic music I'd say Cologne-related material is really incredibly similar. Dettinger, Jorg Burger, some Air Liquide, some Sturm and some Gas is about all that's noteworthy: the rest of it is just horribly mediocre. It's like what Harold Bloom said about only having so much time in life to read books. You only have so much time in life to listen to music. Why waste it listening to yet another Cologne 12" when you can hear Black Dog, Derrick May or Basic Channel for the fiftieth time? Why listen to a mediocre Carl Craig or John Beltran record when their excellent ones are just inches away on your record shelf?
