Jon Drukman's kind of a grumpy guy when it comes to reviews, but if he really
likes something, it is usually something special. His description of the work
habits of the ambient 'musicians' is probably dead on.
But it's kind of beside the point; you can carefully craft shitty music, and
you can bash out brilliance. MIDI, samplers, and sequencers are equalizers;
they allow people without a lot of technical proficiency (keyboard chops) try
and put what they hear in their heads on tape.
Part of what's fun about making synth music is that it can suprise you. You
pile up enough stuff and you can get lucky.
You do need a shit dectector however; the proliferation of boring ambient
records is proof of that.
