I totally agree with you about this. I've not been impressed with anything I've heard from Richard James (AFX). I just played Digeridoo and Analog Bubblebath off of "In Order To Dance 4" just now to reconfirm it. It just sounds like a bunch of knob-fiddling and programmed loops to me (with some definitely expensive equipment). Now this is not intended as flame-bait, and I fully recognize that this is entirely subjective. It is, however, *my* *opinion*. If you *have* to try to change my mind (which ain't gonna happen), use private e-mail so we don't waste bandwidth. In the late 70's and early 80's I listened to Tangerine Dream a *lot*. I've loved the Orb for a couple of years now, and have been searching for music that touches my soul in a similar way. I've recently stumbled onto some great stuff, including: Wm. Orbit's Strange Cargo III (no words can describe it-pure genius) Higher Intelligence Agency's Colourform (again, a glimpse of heaven) Jam & Spoon's Tripomatic Fairytales (both CDs-2001 and 2002) If you haven't heard these, I'd say they are my favorite CDs in the past 2 years and are kind of in a similar vein. ObAFX: I just set up a filter a couple of days ago to strip out all mail with subjects containing "Aphex" or "SAW". I forgot about "AFX", and I'll add it right now. If I had added it earlier I would have missed this message, but frankly, I don't mind missing the occasional message of interest if it saves me from the deluge of AFX-related stuff. This is actually leading up to something, believe it or not. In fact, it seems to me that a significant percentage of the traffic on IDM revolves around AFX, and to a non RJ fan, the stuff *seems* like questions related to "what color socks does Richard James wear? :-)" (paraphrasing someone on the KLF/ORB list recently). (Note: For those without a sense of humor: That was a joke!) I know that I'm exaggerating, and frankly I do have to admit that the traffic here is fairly "Intelligent" for the most part. I also wouldn't want to see AFX stuff completely eliminated from this list (in the name of free speech and open communication), but wouldn't the AFX fans' interests be served better by having a dedicated mailing list? I would certainly support the idea of someone setting up a mailing list for AFX. Any takers? Pete Ashdown, any room on xmission.com along with your new Orbital mailing list (that I just subscribed to)? Don donpierr@netcom.com
