yeah, I know what you mean. for a promo cd, The New Alternative has way
too much of what we've already seen on instinct, and alot of what I found
strong on it was sublicensed from elsewhere for distribution in the states
through instinct (lisa carbon, irresistible force...). *but* from what I
understand, it looks like instinct is finally starting to actually build a
label strategy. right now they're organizing a group of producers to develop
the main sound of the label. hopefully this will give it a stronger sense
of direction and continuity than it has had since entering the "we've lost
moby" phase. it'd better, because i'm one of 'em ;)
they've got 4 or 5 people doing electro-dance stuff (incl. taylor808,
omicron, evolve now), and another person and I doing primarily ambient.
I've heard some of taylor's new Human Mesh Dance coming out soon, and its
great. Also, the "other ambient person" (I'm bad w/names) has some fierce
stuff coming out, too.
As far as east-coast goes (land of the one-shot deal), instinct is offering
greater commitment to the development of individual NE ambient producers
than any other "major indie" label I know... including caroline/astralworks.
so hopefully this next year will stir things up and start to regain the
respect of those who remember the days of the classic "moby/go" and
"opti-mystic/4a.m."
