well i guess i'll tell you all what i thought of the show last night. when we first arrived at the venue, there was a DJ playing trancey stuff, which was pretty good. it was 8pm, an hour before the 'official' show was to start. i forget the DJ's name, but he was from NYC. At almost exactly 9pm, vapour space began his set, and people began to stream in and dance. vapour space's set lasted around half an hour, and i guess that i would call the style that he was playing "weird acid". it was always interesting to listen to, if not always easy to dance to, and it was definitely live. then DJ Tim of the U-U-U-Utah Saints came onstage, and i just knew something good was going to happen ;-), and did a long set that was one of the best DJ sets I have ever heard. then moby walked on stage, and started to lots of stuff live: scream incoherently into the mike, rap, tell people "not to be afraid to have a good time (!)", bang on the octapad, and put a few notes on top with a keyboard. to his credit, moby didn't stage-dive, or destroy any equipment, although he did do a JC pose on top of a box during (ugh) thousand. most of the songs that were played weren't bad, but they sounded too much like the originals... DJ Tim came on for a short set, and then orbital walked onstage with their weird lit headbands. they started out their set with the planet otthe shapes-lush-impact-remind piece, but changed wach of the tracks, especially impact, which was incredible... they then played chime, walk on and monday... for a full hour, they tweaked their sequencers, and made the crowd dance like crazy. then aphex twin came onstage, although you couldn't really see him. his dancer was in front of him, and he was crouched on the floor, hiding behind his synths. most of his set was hard noisy stuff that i had never heard before, although he did play digeridoo, which was cool. i thought that he had a lot of interesting noises, but his tracks were too repetetive and too unmelodic for my tastes. one track had a really high pitched noise throughout, kind of like guitar feedback. i'm not sure if that was a mistake, because he stopped it after about 2 minutes. maybe he stopped it because a lot of people were holding their ears... anyway, the dancer lent energy to the performance, although he got tired a lot (maybe he wasn't used to the high elevation). the show was over after aphex twin was done, and i felt as though i had spent the $14.50 + ticketbastard fee wisely. orbital was incredible, DJ tim was very good, vapour space and aphex twin were interesting, and moby's set was short. later... zach
