After the Detroit show at Industry I had a chance to talk to Richard James
for about 15 minutes. Here's a point-form list of stuff that he told me.
'Phlegm' is NOT coming out anymore. Richard has broken his ties to R&S
'cause they've ripped him off more than once. (Unauthorised t-shirts,
slipmats, lapel pins, etc ...)
He didn't do his scheduled tour with Front 242 in England. He said that
242's manager was a jerk and wouldn't let him use ANY of their equipment.
He also dropped the remix project that he was doing for them for the same
reason. (Manager was a jerk)
'On' will be realeased in the UK (on Warp) in 2 weeks. Sire will release
the single in January. One of the remixes of this track is by Reload - of
'Short Stories ...' fame.
Selected Ambient Works 2 has been pushed back until January from Warp.
It's a triple vinyl/double CD. More (quote) "experimental ambient" than
the first album. He said that it was completely different. This time he
picked all of the tracks that are on the album instead of letting his
friends choose the tracks. The album was originally going to be a 5 LP set!
Analogue Bubblebath 4 and 5 are almost set to go, but won't be released
for a while.
Only Universal Indicator Blue is Aphex Twin. Other two (Red and Yellow)
are Kosmic Kommando. On U.I. Blue one side is Richard by himself, the
other side is a collaboration between him and someone else. Presumably
Kosmic Kommando.
The next Universal Indicator release is U.I. Green. It IS Aphex Twin.
Rephlex have approx. 13 releases due to come out before the end of
January. Lots of experimental stuff, according to Richard.
80% of his tracks have a name even before he writes them. The other 20%
are named afterwards. All of his tracks have names, he just doesn't
throw the names onto the labels of the 12"s!
He wants to pound the guy who is selling t-shirts on the tour. Richard
said that the guy is getting paid too much AND gets to sleep on the tour bus.
Freely admitted that he has a lot of 'goofy' tracks ... eg. 'Popcorn' and
those songs on Caustic Window J4 & J5 that sound like kid's show themes.
He has a new mailorder service that is being run by his girlfriend. Check
out the back of the new realeases to get the address.

He was really friendly and had a firm handshake! I guess having a beard
makes him a tough guy! [grin] Well, my life can end now 'cause I have no
one else in this world that I'd like to meet.
