The original limit as devised by Philips was 74 minutes, precisely the
amount of time required to hold a particular rendition of the favorite
symphony (Beethoven's 9th, if I remember correctly) of the Philips
executive overseeing the project.
CDs which go beyond that limit do so by encoding the data in a
slightly tighter spiral than the original design specified.
