Too right. Autechre are fantastic, but their popularity does them no credit
(if you see what I mean); it seems like the IDM world ends with them for a
lot of people (myself included - I've only just started to look outside of
Warp for music). The journalists who do these stories probably haven't been
fully immersed in the IM culture - their waypoints are in more mainstream
electronic (moby, fatboy slim, etc. etc.), so obviously these bands will
sound like Ae to them. Conditioning, that's the word.
...On the other hand, I suspect that many of their readers will be in the
same situation. If that kind of reporting, however misleading, gets Ae fans
listening to a wider range of music, can that really be a bad thing?
