Sensory Effect presents OSCILLATE-- tuesdays at The Baltic Room--1207 pine st. Seattle WA 9p $12 21+ with residents ELECTROSECT and GREG SKIDMORE live visuals by SCOTT JAMES (of The Now Device) Tuesday, May 30 we welcome special guests PORTABE / BODY.CODE (live ~scape/spectral sound-PORTUGAL) LETS GO OUTSIDE (live- soma recordings/-PDX) here's a little about our guests... PORTABLE Alan Abrahams, the man behind Portable, emerged out of the ruins of a post apartheid South Africa. Growing up in an impoverished Cape Town township, tagged “Beverly Hills” by the locals, Abrahams was always immersed in his sisters ritual of getting ready for a night out to a soundtrack of 80’s soul, hi life and hip hop. Inspired by the first batch of Chicago house records, the foundations were laid for his future in music. Experimenting with ways of combining traditional African rhythms with the 4/4 sound of house, Abrahams completed various projects in South Africa. Most of which gave a commentary to the political turmoil of the country at the time. Abrahams inevitably became frustrated by the geographic isolation of the country and relocated to London in 1997. In the UK Abrahams went on to complete various releases for internationally recognized labels such as Context and Background Records before starting up his own label, Süd Electronic in 2002. As well as doing many of London’s alternative spaces, Portable’s live appearances have included a special Context night at Batofar in Paris; a spot in London with Farben, Juan Atkins and Andy Vaz; a micro tour of Japan with Background Records; and an appearance at The Kiosk in Frankfurt. Portable was also recently part of The Wire Magazines 20th birthday celebrations in Paris. A promotion of the album “Cycling” has taken him to Japan, Germany and France. The later part of 2004 saw the release of Portable's Flicker e.p. which co-incided with two tours of the States and a debut in Mexico city. 2005 took saw the Portable sound reach as far afield as Brazil in South America, with cities including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo BODY.CODE Lisbon, Portugal-based Alan Abrahams has earned a lot of attention lately. His albums as Portable for the Background and ~scape imprints have garnered near-universal acclaim for their deft fusion of tribal rhythms and a modern micro-house sensibility. For his first LP as Bodycode, The Conservation of Electric Charge, Abrahams focuses on the more dancefloor-oriented aspects of his style, yielding a gorgeous album born from the belief that the psyche can be unlocked via the body. Bodycode also came from necessity – while on tour playing club dates, Abrahams was compelled to seek the most engaging sound for that environment. Remarkably adept at its task, Bodycode’s mesmerizing percussive arrangements and subtle melodic flourishes create an immediately engaging sound that lingers in the mind long after the club has closed. LETS GO OUTSIDE Stephen Schieberl has produced electronic music for over a decade, taking the mantra "Let's go outside" as his moniker. His discography includes everything from nearly silent ambient to the most destructive of techno, and all which lies between. Let's Go Outside's performances borrow from this immense palette to create a form of techno that often defies genre. His range of venues is as varied as his tastes; opening for Psychic TV, DJing at raves up and down the West coast, and even creating the soundtrack to a sensory depravation art installation in Phoenix, AZ. His collaborators include Senor Frio of Ainu, Tuvan throat singer Soriah, sonic innovator Fognode, West coast techno-legend Freaky Chakra and more. Let's Go Outside brings the listener a unique experience as only an insomniac-parachutist-geek can __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
