this is going out on an esoteric tangent, but...
perhaps certain autistic people? much like being able to instantly
count the cards in a deck tossed on the floor ("rain man")?
there's a character in the william gibson novel 'idoru' who could see
patterns in various data streams. not just the literal "matrix"
representations, but the greater trends that the information he scans
represents - such as figuring out from someone's credit card
purchases, bank statements, and general comings and goings that they
were going to kill themselves.
