Richard Devine bio:
Computer science scholar by day, electronic musician by night, Richard Devine is one of the ever-profilerating American stable of "intelligent techno" producers. Formerly a skate punk growing up outside of Atlanta, Devine began collecting audio hardware in the early '90s, going so far as to find a local synth wizard to build him unique devices. Since then, he has graduated to digital audio software, and is recognized for producing
a layered and heavily processed sound, combining influences from old and modern electronic music. As a result of praise of his music from Autechre, Devine recorded an album for Warp Records which was jointly released by Schematic.. His release on Asphodel / Schematic entitled "Asect / Desect" is a wild roller coaster ride through the far reaches of electro - acoustical experimentation and frantic pulse driven beatbeds.
Devine found electronic music and has reinvented it in his own way. In the latter part of his life , he learned to build, manipulate, and master the machines of modern music. In the process, he has refined himself with the affiliation of some of today's more respected musical establishments.. He masterfully orchestrates a titanic array of rapidly moving information, cleverly channeling it into an organized stream of sound. There are seemingly endless layers of rhythms, spanning every notch of frequency, spiraling around one another like complex DNA strands hinged together in a grid-like lattice. Never competing, never repeating the same phrase. t. Like a million minuscule sounds, obediently marching to the cadence of a heavy step. The music is in the beat itself. It is "funk for robots", a broken and restructured music. Mathematically reconstructed with futuristic tools, conceived by a highly evolved mind.
During the past number of years, Richard Devine has become a much-in-demand remixer, working on tracks from the likes of Matthew Herbert, Slicker, labelmates Phoenecia, and, most notably, Aphex Twin. He has also designed sounds for virtual instrument deity Native Instruments, scored commercials for ciients and Touchstone Pictures
and engineered and performed his own ear-tearing music mayhem worldwide.
For sound design, composition, remixing and producing, Devine uses everything he can get his hands on. I use Cycling 74s Max/MSP and Pluggo, Logic Audio quite a bit, Reaktor, Supercollider, , GRM Tools, CDP, Soundhack, Soundmaker, Bias Peak, Metasynth
Kyma. Sometimes different DSP applications affect sound in certain ways that other programs cant. It was just the way that the programmer designed it and implemented certain functions and, lo and behold, you get a whole different sound characteristic or personality, which makes that program totally unique, he says. I always use everything, and keep my sound generation possibilities open.

Trevor Wishart bio:
Trevor Wishart's audentity spans a number of genres, among them music theatre, site-specific events, extended compositions for electronic sounds, and music for live vocalists. His most well-known works include 'Red Bird' (1977), awarded a Euphonie d'Or at the 1992 Bourges Festival, the 'Vox cycle' (1980-88) first heard in full at the 1989 Proms, and 'Tongues Of Fire', winner of the Golden Nica for computer music at the Linz Ars Electronica Festival, 1995.
He is particularly concerned with the significance of imagination and personal creativity in the modern world and his work often deals with these issues. He has been involved in new developments in music education, the Musicians Collective movement, and in developing accessible advanced computer music systems. His book, 'Audible Design' is a practical musical guide to sound transformation techniques using the computer.
.
His work has been commissioned by IRCAM, the Paris Biennale, the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and Humanities, the DAAD in Berlin, the French Ministry of Culture and the BBC Proms. In the year 2000, 'Birthrite, a Fleeting Opera' was presented on moving barges on the Thames with performers from the Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet.
Wishart is an independent composer living and working in the North of England. He has held residencies, visiting professorships, or research fellowships in Australia, Canada, Germany, Holland, Sweden, and the USA and at several Universities in the UK. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the University of York.
"Master composer Trevor Wishart shapes recordings of the human voice into a majestic, sonic extravaganza. With satire, sympathy, and his extraordinary talent with sound, Wishart gives us an audio panorama of the world today through the voices of many different people, famous and unknown. . Tongues of Fire, from the mid 90's is a masterpiece. It is a complex extended composition that explores the human condition through the transformation of the human voice. In a spectacular display of skill in performing audio transformations, Wishart bases a major work of sounds and textures on a few utterings. This disc is an important moment in the history of electronic music."
"Explores our human aspirations and absurdities, through the musical transformation of the human voice. The slightly angry, disgruntled, comic mutterings with which the piece begins are the source of all the sounds, which appear in it: sounds suggesting drums, water, metallic resonances, fireworks, or entirely imaginary materials or events, all generated through processes of sound-transformation on the computer. 'Tongues of Fire' uses the whole range of sound-processing and sound-texturing tools available on the computer. Many new and non-standard techniques are used, such as constructive distortion (e.g. spectral tracing, waveset distortion) and sound-shredding."
