oh i wasn't directing it at you. thats why it was phrased the way it was (though i guess it could have been better). i was just sort of thinking out loud because i sometimes wonder how many people understand the way this works, and no its not an absolute. it a serious grey area. there are benefits to both ordering direct and driving up the appeal for distributors. but if a label/artists only sales were through distribution routes then they would have to sell twice as many (on average) records then they would via direct just to pay the bills. again i was just pointing out that this situation should be taken into consideration when purchasing because it does affect the future of the artist and/or label. but i guess there is no way to know which one is better for them short of asking them directly( which i don't think anyone should feel weird about BTW ). now i sound like preaching or something, which was not the point at all. sorry for the confusion, this is why i generally just read instead of write. steven ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adam Piontek" To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] New Funckarma on Sending Orbs Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 23:09:17 -0500 Whoa, no need to get your undies in a bunch. A) I always bought direct from Merck and it doesn't seem to have made a difference. Though they seem to be closing down for different reasons (moving on). B) I be po' now and I need to shave dollars off wherever I can. Perhaps I should just download it, what do you think? Forgive me for trying to add some requested information to the list. That said, I agree - it's probably best (if you can) to purchase directly from labels, if the label budgets itself as a direct-selling label. I say that because I've heard a couple of label heads say it's better to buy from stores because it creates a demand that distributors see, so distributors are more willing to do business with them. -Adam On Jan 10, 2006, at 10:35 PM, steven roeder wrote: > i would think that more people would WANT to order direct from the label. > knowing that the label and artists would be receiving more money then if > they went to some discount place that is under cutting them and taking > like 40% of of the top of that. if you did this more often then we might > not be seeing so many label dropping off. i understand that these > businesses need to make money too, but trying to find the best deal can > actually hurt the musicians in the end. that 2 or 3 dollars could be a > meal for someone. you think im kidding? > > sorry just i thought, > > steven > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Adam Piontek" > To: idm@hyperreal.org > Subject: Re: [idm] New Funckarma on Sending Orbs > Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 21:57:53 -0500 > > > I found Funckarma's release (and other Sending Orbs stuff) listed > at some store I never heard of in Hong Kong called Saiko Sounds: > > http://www.saikosounds.com/english/display_release.asp?id=5408 > > I ordered it from there because, with shipping, it was a couple > bucks cheaper than ordering directly from Sending Orbs. > > -Adam > > > On Jan 10, 2006, at 7:30 PM, Peter Hollo wrote: > >> Nat asked: >>> anyone know where i can pick up SendingOrbs stuff in NYC? my usual > OM and >>> Kims never heard of them... and never have Modeselektor in stock > either... >>> which is on the 'neo ouija' topic as well... weird. >> >> Etherea were the best place I found for electronica/IDM in NYC when > I was >> last there (year and a half ago), although O(ther)M(usic) and Kim's > are >> both great.
