I think I did something a month or more ago when the first 2005
recommendations request was going around...
But I thought I'd just pipe these in anyway now that the year is
actually over and my ideas have changed a little. Only a few things;
like others I was listening more to older stuff this year. Hopefully a
couple of these will be things someone has missed out on and will find
they like.
So anyway, here's my list, no particular order (though the Saint Etienne
would probably be my favorite for the year):
-- Brahma - Plink
(fans of Bola check this out, it's the group he's in, I'm guessing
this music is dated from 1999-2002 or so, considering the sound of his
albums from around that time. released online for a limited time at
http://www.davidac.fsworld.co.uk/brahma.htm ...Bola-Rhyphic)
-- Fell - Between Octavia And Laguna
(full-length MP3 release at enpeg digital, lush and gorgeous, when I
was listening to it today I kept thinking of Secret Frequency Crew)
-- Saint Etienne - Tales From Turnpike House
(quite possibly the perfect album, I absolutely and truly could not
get enough of this album this year - the tracks work beautifully
together from beginning to end, with dance-pop highs and nostalgic lows)
-- M.I.A. - Arular
(simply fun, for those who haven't heard it it's a kind of minimal
sexy electro hip-hop)
-- Freeform - Outside In
(I love Freeform, but I admit he gets a bit silly; and then this
album hits - surprisingly soothing, a mellower level of fun — every
album is an evolution with him, and he just keeps getting better)
-- Broadcast - Tender Buttons
(minimal and immediate fuzzy lo-fi pop, alluring)
-- Lackluster - Slice
(what more can I ask for, other than things I don't need anyway)
-- Solvent - Elevators And Oscillators
(fantastic semi-remix-album follow-up to Apples & Synthesizers)
-- Autechre - Untilted
(well, yeah)
-- Fischerspooner - Odyssey
(so sue me)
and still loving from 2004:
-- ML - Man Is The Warmest Place To Hide
-- o9 - Church of the Ghetto PC
-- Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
-- Secret Frequency Crew - Forest of the Echo Downs
-- The Arcade Fire - Funeral
