I've downloaded two "versions" of the album. The first is the fake that's
been floating around for a bit. It's not bad at all and does resemble
previous BOC material, but it doesn't have the track available at Warp. You
know you've got it if you check the tracks' info on iTunes and see an
"Encoded with: Casey Grabowski" -- Grabowski (and friends?) being the
author(s) of the hoax. While the track titles are identical to those listed
at Warp, the track times and coding [320kbps] differ from the actual album
now available on p2p networks.
The Campfire Headphase is encoded at 192kbps and does contain the track
available from Warp. Stylistically the other fourteen tracks are uniform
with the first. Like previous posters mentioned, it does have a more band-y
feel and there is quite a bit of acoustic guitar to be had. Whereas previous
albums had mapped out a certain hypnotic, "evil" approach, The Campfire
Headphase ambles along with none of their depth, style, and sense of
direction. It's like a particularly bland soundtrack to a particularly bland
summer. While Pitchforkians and other fans of non-experimental/kitsch-value
instrumental poseur rock will probably be overjoyed to hear this stuff, I
think that others will be let down.
These statements will probably be written off as the ramblings of a fusty
and vision-less IDMer. Dismiss them at your leisure. The new BOC will be
lauded as "Brilliant!" and "Fantastical!" and all will be right with the
universe.
Or will it?
