For me, it has nothing to do with all-guitars or no-guitars, because I'll be the first to admit that they've got some clever moments on the production side of things. For me, it all comes down to the overwrought songwriting and its gratuitous use of bog-standard weepy minor chord progressions. It's like shoegaze-by-numbers. Unlike most other acts I don't care about or don't like, their music actually makes me angry when I listen to it for any extended period. It's like listening to someone whine for an hour (and that comment has nothing to do with the timbre of the vocals). And yes, I've heard the new record. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but it's even worse than the last one. One man's opinion. Your mileage, as they say, may vary, but I'll be looking for opportunities to see Schnauss on an M83-less bill, like the all-ages show at Open End Gallery in Chicago on 3/18.
